The repertoire on this LP ranges from “Limehouse Blues” (which is not really a blues) to “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be” and several originals.

Starting in the late ’50s, Gerry Mulligan recorded a series of encounters with fellow saxophonists that included such immortals as Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster. In 1986 he resumed the practice for this one date on which his baritone is matched with the tenor of the young great Scott Hamilton. The music, which includes warm ballads and fairly hot romps (five of the seven songs are Mulligan originals), consistently swing and are quite enjoyable.

Chet Baker, who once dominated the world as a cool jazz hero, revived brilliantly after a long stagnation and wandering life due to drug damage, etc. A live album of a co-starring concert after a long absence. The standard songs and Mulligan’s original songs are heard as if they were able to play in New York again. By the way, the guitar is John Scofield, which is also his first recording.

Together with Gil Evans and Miles Davis, the 20 year old Gerry Mulligan conceived the revolutionary nonet music for Birth of the Cool. In Stuttgart, at age 50, he was already looking back on a career spanning almost thirty years and was much in demand. The fact that he wrote fascinating film scores and won Grammys for them in the ‘70s, not to mention his burgeoning interest in jazz-rock fusions, once again highlighted this extraordinary musician’s exceptional openness and creative potential. These recordings were previously released as “Liederhalle Stuttgart November 22, 1977”.

Gerald Joseph Mulligan (April 6, 1927 – January 20, 1996), also known as Jeru, was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger. Though primarily known as one of the leading jazz baritone saxophonists—playing the instrument with a light and airy tone in the era of cool jazz—Mulligan was also a significant arranger, working with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and others. His pianoless quartet of the early 1950s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the best cool jazz groups. Mulligan was also a skilled pianist and played several other reed instruments. Several of his compositions, such as “Walkin’ Shoes” and “Five Brothers”, have become standards…

I think it is well that we who make music keep that in our consciousness.” -GERRY MULLIGAN

Mulligan started on the piano before learning clarinet and the various saxophones. His initial reputation was as an arranger. In 1944 he wrote charts for Johnny Warrington’s radio band and soon was making contributions to the books of Tommy Tucker and George Paxton. He moved to New York in 1946 and joined Gene Krupa’s Orchestra as a staff arranger; his most notable chart was “Disc Jockey Jump.” The rare times he played with Krupa’s band was on alto and the same situation existed when he was with Claude Thornhill in 1948.
