This one-and-only recorded collaboration between jazz greats Geri Allen and Kurt Rosenwinkel took place live at the famed Philharmonie de Paris in 2012—the two play as if with one mind. Geri often spoke of her desire to do a studio recording to document the ‘flow and freedom” she experienced playing with Kurt that night in Paris. Unfortunately, we lost her before that date never materialized, and fortunately, that concert was recorded. The acoustics in this hall are magnificent, This album, produced by Kurt Rosenwinkel and Motéma’s Jana Herzen is dedicated to Geri’s memory and is truly a ‘lovesome thing’ for fans of Geri, of Kurt, and of piano and guitar jazz.

Geri Allen is a natural choice, an already well-established collaborator with each member of Trio 3. Cyrille played on her 1984 debut recording as leader (The Printmakers) as well as more currently with her Mary Lou Williams Collective. Since first moving to New York from Detroit, Allen performed as a member of Lake’s ensembles throughout the ‘80s, from her first ever NYC gig with Lake’s Jump Up to four subsequent recordings under his leadership. Workman featured Allen on his 1995 recording Cerebral Caverns.
Needless to say, there was no need for formal introductions when this dynamic foursome entered the studio fresh off four straight nights performing at Birdland in New York. Admirably Trio 3 has neither given up their very essence or compromised their music or approach in this new chapter of the band, nor is Allen’s presence intrusive to any degree. As a matter of fact, the exact opposite: the four thrive as one under this unique union whose whole is much greater than the sum of its parts.

Life of a Song is Geri Allen’s first recording under her own name in six long years. She teams with the rhythm section of bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette, whom she worked with on the late Betty Carter’s stellar live date Feed the Fire in 1993. Allen composed eight of the album’s 11 cuts, and the covers include Bud Powell’s “Dance of the Infidels,” Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life,” and Mal Waldron’s “Soul Eyes.” This last selection is augmented by the participation of Marcus Belgrave on flugelhorn, saxophonist Dwight Andrews, and trombonist Clifton Anderson.

The longest track on “Perfection,” the debut album by a jazz trio with David Murray on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Geri Allen on piano and Terri Lyne Carrington on drums, clocks in at just over eight minutes, covering so much ground that it feels almost like an epic. Composed by Mr. Murray, it’s a swinging tune with a pensive yet intrepid melody, and a midsection of bristling abstraction. The title is playfully apt: “The David, Geri & Terri Show.” Dynamic combustion is the core characteristic of this all-star trio, which first convened at the 2015 NYC Winter Jazzfest. Mr. Murray, 61, is an improviser of great, garrulous bluster, while Ms. Allen and Ms. Carrington, both in their 50s, have forged prominent careers more in line with the postbop mainstream.
