Europakonzert 2012 from Vienna with Gustavo Dudamel and Gautier Capuçon

The Berliner Philharmoniker gave their annual Europakonzert here in 2012 under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel – with music from Austria, of course.
The main work was Beethoven’s revolutionary Fifth Symphony, while the brilliant soloist in Haydn’s First Cello Concerto was Gautier Capuçon, making his Philharmoniker debut.

Place of longing Paris – with the cellist Gautier Capuçon.

“Gautier Capuçon is like a diamond in a ring and sparkles on its edging,“ the New York Times enthusiastically resorted to pictorial comparisons. With such exuberant praise, it’s no wonder that the famous cellist’s albums are also absolute bestsellers. Intuition, emotions and sensations are now followed by his next album with a ravishing program: Destination Paris is dedicated to atmospheric evergreens and ranges from popular film music to French chansons to classical works.

In a characteristically imaginative move, the Quatuor Ebène complements Schubert’s sublime Quintet for two violins, viola and two cellos (Gautier Capuçon joins the ensemble) with a group of his songs – sensitively arranged by the quartet’s cellist, Raphaël Merlin, and sung by German baritone Matthias Goerne, one of the world’s great interpreters of lieder.

In 2014 Erato released Schubert’s glorious ‘Trout’ Quintet, recorded live at Paris’s Salle Pleyel by members of Quatuor Ebène with nonagerian pianist Menahem Pressler. The French quartet – with a new viola-player, 24-year-old Adrien Boisseau and a distinguished guest cellist, Gautier Capuçon – now turns to another Schubert quintet, his final chamber work and one of his sublime masterpieces: the Quintet for two violins, viola and two cellos in C major D956, often known simply as the Schubert Quintet. Its slow movement in particular, in which time seems to stands still, is a favourite with music-lovers.

Renaud Capuçon, Gautier Capuçon and Frank Braley, well established as chamber-music partners, perform two of Beethoven’s greatest piano trios, the ‘Ghost’ and the ‘Archduke’. “Together, all three musicians have the quality that is the most priceless of all in playing chamber music,” wrote The Guardian when the Capuçons and Braley played the ‘Archduke’ at London’s Wigmore Hall, “they listen intently to each other and always take note of what they do. Their account of the Archduke Trio … had a tremendous sense of organic coherence.”

Gautier Capuçon & Yuja Wang – Franck & Chopin: Cello Sonatas (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

Young and handsome, striding almost menacingly towards the camera like Bonnie & Clyde on the album cover (but decidedly less dangerous), Gautier Capuçon and Yuja Wang appear just as striking and audacious nonetheless. Used to playing together, they bring a spirited approach to César Franck’s Sonata in A major, with a famous transcription by the cellist Jules Delsart which was endorsed by the composer. This world-renowned masterpiece has since become a staple of the repertoires of every cellist in the world. The melancholy nature of the music allows the instrument to display its full range of vocal possibilities. The two musicians give a daring performance, infusing it with an expressive and passionate romanticism. Gautier Capuçon, not averse to using soaring vibrato in large quantities, throws himself into Franck’s universe with the complicity of the extraordinary Chinese virtuoso Yuja Wang, whose dextrous agility on the keys translates through the speaker.

Universally recognised as the finest cellist of his generation, Gautier Capuçon has a firm reputation as a concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. He is a regular performer with the Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony, NHK Symphony, and at festivals such as Verbier and Lugano, and has won several awards at the ECHOS and the Victoires de la Musique.

Following on from last year’s live recording of the Shostakovich cello concertos, this album sees Gautier return to the studio with his friend and recital partner of many years, Frank Braley, in a programme of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Cello and Piano. In addition the album includes Beethoven’s wonderful variations on three different themes – two on arias from Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte, and the other from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus. This is the first new recording of the complete Beethoven cello works for some time and is a long-awaited release.

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Sonata in G minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 19 was completed in November 1901 and published a year later.

Rachmaninoff regarded the role of the piano as not just an accompaniment but equal to the cello. Most of the themes are introduced by the piano, while they are embellished and expanded in the cello’s part.

For this album, which is made up entirely of “treats” from all manner of genres, the cellist Gautier Capuçon seems to have wanted to “illustrate” his life by retracing different emotional stages, from his childhood in Savoy to his Vienna years, by way of his studies in Paris and his discovery of more recent repertoires. This is a sort of invitation on a voyage, in the company of the Paris Chamber Orchestra, or by pianist Jérôme Ducros, for a few unmissable pieces by Saint-Saëns, Massenet, Popper, Joplin, Tchaikovsky, Popper, Piazzola, Casals or Paganini: this way, we are able to hear works which are often performed as transcriptions, as in the golden age of salon virtuosos. These hyper-virtuoso, hyper-romantic pieces allow us to enjoy our cellist’s art to its full.

This release by cellist Gautier Capucon is a crossover album, consisting of short melodies from various classical and pop sources; the range of the titular emotions is rather narrow. Listener reactions may depend on whether that’s what they’re after, but it’s certainly a well-executed specimen of the form. Capucon’s classical selections hew pretty close to the list of all-time greatest hits, including Debussy’s Clair de lune and Albinoni’s Adagio, as well as other just slightly less familiar pieces. Beyond these, however, Capucon is more adventurous. He pairs his chestnuts, which are very evocatively played, with not only classical crossover works from Max Richter, Michael Nyman, Ludovico Einaudi, and Qigang Chen, but also pop songs and instrumental pieces. The presence of Edith Piaf on a French release of this type is not so unusual, but Leonard Cohen (the admittedly ubiquitous Hallelujah) and Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer are novel. The Joplin work and Astor Piazzolla’s tango Oblivion come at the end and break the consistent mood of the music that has come before; listeners may or may not find that this works. A major contributor to the overall sound is pianist J’er^ome Ducros, who accompanies Capucon and has also arranged many of the pieces for cello and the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris; they’re unusually varied arrangements of this type. Buyers after crossover cello music will find an attractive and inventive example here. – James Manheim

“Gautier Capuçon plays what many people love, and he plays it masterfully,” wrote ndr. de about the exceptional cellist. To exhaust all facets of his instrument, he repeatedly breaks through the usual cello repertoire. In his current album Sensations, Capuçon now presents cello arrangements to pieces from classical music, pop and chanson. “The cello is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful melodic instruments to travel and explore these different universes,” the famous Frenchman reveals the origin of his passion for discovery. “While I have been playing some of these pieces for a few years, others have been specially arranged for this new album.”
