Recorded as a duo with Gary Peacock, “53rd Street” reflects techniques developed over many years by Robert Kaddouch in his attempts to embrace, capture and convey musical worlds which are close to his heart and relate to meaningful events in his life. His interpretation is linked to the authenticity of this approach which mixes jazz, children’s songs, Yiddish themes and his own compositions. Their encounter in July 2015 in New York’s Avatar Studios brought them on a common journey, alternating these traditional themes with standards arranged by Robert Kaddouch, as well as two of his recent compositions (“53rd Street” and “Agile”). The team intertwines on a hip ‘What Is This Thing Called Love’ while going impressionistic on a liquid ‘Lover Man’…. the piano and bass sigh and weave with thoughtful elegance.

Changes is a jazz album released by Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and Gary Peacock in 1984. This group subsequently became known as the “Standards Trio”. The album features improvised compositions recorded at the same sessions as the two volumes released as Standards. In 2008 the three albums were collected into a boxed set, Setting Standards: New York Sessions.

The trio originally worked together on a 1977 album headline by Peacock, Tales of Another, coming back together in 1983 when producer Manfred Eicher proposed a trio album to Jarrett. The three joined in a studio in Manhattan, New York for a 1½ day session during which they recorded enough material for three albums, the two Standards volumes and Changes without rehearsing or pre-planning the playlist.

“Another live album from Jarrett’s trio?” It’s hard not to let out a little yelp as the Allentown pianist continues his apparently-infinite discographic march, aided by drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock. But after listening to the first-ever release of this concert from 14 November 1998 at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center, you might start to see where producer Manfred Eicher was coming from when he decided to bring this one out. Keith Jarrett even said himself: “I was amazed to hear how well the music worked. For me, it’s not only a historical document, but a truly great concert.”

Now in its 30th year, the Keith Jarrett Trio is widely considered, as the NY Times recently remarked, to have set the gold standard for jazz groups, and this sparkling concert recording from 2009 is issued to mark a milestone anniversary. The Somewhere in which the Standards trio find themselves is Lucerne, Switzerland with a performance both exploratory and in-the-tradition. The Neue Zurcher Zeitung headlined its review of the show Kontrollierte Ekstase controlled ecstasy an apt metaphor for a set that begins in improvisational Deep Space modulates into Miles Davis Solar, soars through the standards Stars Fell On Alabama and Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea and climaxes with an extended romp through West Side Story, as Bernsteins Somewhere and Tonight are bridged by the freely associative Jarrett original Everywhere.

The young, Vancouver guitarist and oud player Gordon Grdina sought out Gary Peacock after a Keith Jarrett concert in San Francisco in 2000, and for the next five years Gary became his mentor and teacher. At their last meeting at Gary’s house in upstate New York there was virtually no discussion, they just sessioned together for an hour or so, and the next day Gordon asked Gary if he would do a trio record. Gary agreed, and helped bring Paul Motian (another of Gordon’s musical heroes) into the picture. Recorded in Brooklyn in January, Think Like the Waves is a remarkable international jazz debut, full of compelling original tunes by Grdina and deep interaction by the trio.

Azure features beautiful duets by two great improvisers who proved their compatibility long ago. Bassist Gary Peacock and pianist Marilyn Crispell made some outstanding music together in Crispell’s trio with late drummer Paul Motian, but their duo project also has an extensive history, until now unrecorded. With their shared sense of lyricism, their individual compositional styles and their profound background in free playing, Peacock and Crispell are exceptional musical partners. The album, self-produced in upstate New York, home territory for both musicians, contains pieces written by each one, duo improvisations and highly inventive piano and bass solos.

In the realm of the piano trio the bar is set high, and creative bassist Gary Peacock has helped raise it in the groups of Bill Evans, Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett. However, the formative 1981 ECM release Voice from the Past: Paradigm finds Peacock working in a unique quartet setting with stellar accompaniment from Jan Garbarek (tenor & soprano saxophone), Tomasz Stanko (trumpet) and Jack DeJohnette (drums). The uncanny interplay between Peacock and DeJohnette on standouts like “Voice From the Past,” “Moor” and “Ode for Tomten” wonderfully foreshadows the top flight work they would go on to do together in just a few years time in Keith Jarrett’s trio.
