In 1733, Pergolesi created La Serva padrona in Naples, which won over Paris in 1752, becoming the symbol of Italian music. Quickly played in French as La Servante Maitresse, it inspired Rousseau for his Devin du Village, a parody of which was created under the title Les Amours de Bastien et Bastienne. Mozart discovered it in 1768 and composed his Bastien und Bastienne in German for the private theatre of the magician Mesmer. These two masterpieces bound through style and history come to life with colourful plots: lightness, falsehoods and what is comic create delightfully bubbly situations for the tyrannical servant and naive shepherds, from which Pergolesi and Mozart derived the best musical effects. Adele Carlier, David Tricou and Marc Scoffoni, with the Opera Royal Orchestra and Gaetan Jarry, carry this torch of emotion and comedy, so emblematic of the 18th century.

A true Baroque dream: a performance of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s masterpiece David et Jonathas, one of the wonders of French Baroque opera, can be experienced here in the Palace Chapel of Versailles, and as a CD recording and DVD production! in 1688, this dramatic version of the fateful love between David and Jonathan was first heard at the Jesuit school Louis-le-Grand. The intense emotions of the piece can be experienced even more intensely on the DVD through the staging, the stage design and the costumes under the rousing direction of Gaétan Jarry.

At the time I am writing this review, the coronation of Charles III as monarch of the United Kingdom, succeeding his deceased mother, Elizabeth II, is just a few weeks away. It is very likely that part of the coronation ceremony will be a performance of Zadok the Priest, one of the four Coronation Anthems that Handel composed in 1727. This piece has been part of each coronation ceremony since then.

It was on 18 July 1668 that Moliere successfully performed George Dandin ou le mari confondu, a play mixed with a sung pastoral, for “Le Grand Divertissement Royal de Versailles” offered by Louis XIV to his Court, as a celebration of the Peace of Aachen. This amusing story of a rich peasant who purchases a young noble girl includes interludes set to the splendid music of Lully. The same year sees the promisaing meeting between Lully and Quinault: together they write for the King La Grotte de Versailles, in which Louis is glorified, and dances in person the role of a nymph. These two works, symbolic of the creative vigour of the early days of Versailles, and of the artistic appetite of a thirty-year-old Sovereign, are brought back to life thanks to Gaétan Jarry and the ensemble Marguerite Louise, with incomparable taste: tambourines, flutes and musettes are part of the festivities and the trumpets proclaim the glory of Louis. Here we have a scintillating echo of the sumptuous festivities given at Versailles by Louis XIV!

Even if his wealth had come about in a rather questionable way, James Brydges, Earl of Carnavon and First Duke of Chandos, acquired at least an honorable musical-historical memory in the late 1710s as an important patron and patron of Handel. For the services in the chapel of the magnificent estate, Handel wrote the Chandos Anthems. Three of these little-known pearls, which impress with their virtuosity, their light texture and their timbres, will presented here by the ensemble Marguerite Louise under Gaétan Jarry with a lot of verve.

À l’origine développés pour la Chapelle du Roi par Du Mont et Lully, et portés à leur aboutissement par Delalande durant quatre décennies au service de Louis XIV, ces œuvres qui résonnaient chaque jour, à la Messe du Roi, furent ensuite les piliers des programmes du Concert Spirituel créé en 1725. C’est alors que vont s’imposer deux nouveaux maîtres dans ce style : Rameau et Mondonville.
