It all goes back to year 1965. Spencer Davis Group was recording a single for the label Phillips Germany after having released its number one hit “Keep on Running”. Alongside the guitarist and a former German teacher Spencer Davis, Steve Winwood and his older brother Muff also the upcoming drummer Pete York was a member of the band. The producer of the session was Siggi Loch. “We’ve been friends ever since”, Pete York, who turned 70 in August, reminisces. “Maybe it is Siggi’s birthday present that I got the chance to release this album on ACT”.

Find Your Way is an impressively expansive and yet cohesive musical journey from Bolla and his quartet, completed by Swiss jazz stylist Heiri Känzig on bass, world class drummer Jojo Mayer and guest violinist Lajos Sārközi. Displaying influences including Bartók, Monk, Rollins and Coltrane, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Stevie Wonder and Django Reinhardt, the album also showcases Bolla’s search for new sounds and for a musical identity of his own.

In the 1960s, at one of the pinnacles of jazz music’s international popularity, many American stars of the genre landed in Copenhagen to play at the legendary Jazz House Montmartre – with several of the most prominent instrumentalists settling in the Danish capital and subsequently enriching the local music scene there with their presence and playing. For the listeners who were in the audience at that time, it’s impossible to talk about jazz today for very long before they mention first-hand concert experiences with Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Ed Thigpen, Brew Moore, Duke Jordan, Bud Powell, and Oscar Pettiford.
