Frank Sinatra Conducts Tone Poems of Color is a 1956 album of short tone poems by eight notable mid-20th century Hollywood composers.

The album was conducted by Sinatra and marked the first musical collaboration between Sinatra and Gordon Jenkins. Each composition was inspired by the poetry of Norman Sickel.

A chapter discussing the album, “The Colors of Ava: Tone Poems of Color and the Painful Measure of Sinatra’s Passions,” appears in A Storied Singer: Frank Sinatra as Literary Conceit (Greenwood Press, 2002) by Gilbert L. Gigliotti.

The album was the first to be recorded at the then-newly opened Capitol Studios, which are under the Capitol Records Tower.

1954, first album of that year,. IIGMHTY recorded July. Pop hit. 24 Sept & 8 Oct 1954 recorded. In 1954 Doris and Frank Sinatra, two of Hollywood’s biggest recording and screen stars, joined forces for Young At Heart. This movie was a remake by Warner Bros. of their acclaimed 1938 picture Four Daughters. Appropriately, Columbia Records released a 10” album (CL 6339) of songs from the movie on 1 November 1954. However, because of Sinatra’s exclusive contract with rival label Capitol, only Doris could cut new studio recordings for this release. She therefore reprised five beauties from the movie’s soundtrack, which included her solo version of “You My Love”, a song she had originally sung with Frank in the film’s memorable finale scene.

For the last half-century, Watertown has occupied a unique spot in Frank Sinatra’s discography. Loathed by a loud swath of Sinatra purists, beloved by a devoted group of fans who live to evangelize the album’s singular sensibility, and basically ignored by everyone else, the album has lingered as a curiosity that bridged the dominance of the Chairman’s run through the ’50s and ’60s with the relegation to elder statesman that he was to embrace through the ’70s and ’80s. When Sinatra recorded Watertown, he hadn’t had a number one pop album in more than four years, and as the rock revolution moved from teen fad to lasting cultural movement in the late ’60s, he had increasingly moved to the periphery of popular consciousness. And while he had dipped his toe into “modern” sounds throughout the last half of the decade—a Judy Collins or a Glen Campbell cover here, a little fuzz guitar there—Sinatra was very much not interested in any sort of crossover attempts that were not on his own terms. So, in an attempt to revisit the creative and commercial high-water marks of his legendary concept albums, his first since 1966’s Moonlight Sinatra, he enlisted Bob Gaudio (of the Four Seasons) to co-write (along with commercial jingle writer Jake Holmes) and produce a more contemporary take. Unlike his previous concept work, Watertown was narratively driven, telling an opening-to-epilogue story of a middle-aged man whose family left him in his peaceful, pleasant small town as they sought out a more exciting life in the big city. No, it is not the most subtle metaphor for where Sinatra was personally and professionally at the time, but it was a daring approach nonetheless. Wrestling with age and grief and loss, the story never comes off as cloying or self-indulgent, and Sinatra handles the material with the emotional resonance and vocal precision of his best works. It is, to be clear, a fantastic album. In addition to Sinatra’s voice being in excellent form, the arrangements—straddling the line between baroque pop and gentle orchestral mellowness—are as warm and welcoming as they are structurally satisfying. Sure, the childrens’ chorus and poetry-night vocal delivery on “She Says” is a little jarring, but even that approach is serving the narrative. The session takes on this new expanded edition are also hugely rewarding, especially the spare, driving alternate version of “The Train” and two other similarly exhilarating alternate takes of album cuts. Even more notable is “Lady Day,” a wrenching ballad that, despite its centrality to the story being told, was left off the original album; it’s available here in three versions, along with three other alternate session takes that are a bit more driving and direct than their final versions. Soon after Watertown, Sinatra would retire for a couple years, after which he would re-emerge, fully comfortable in his elder statesman role. And while he would have an adult contemporary hit here and there throughout the ’70s and ’80s (and would again attempt a concept album—1980’s Trilogy—that has yet to find its reputation rehabilitated by time), it’s arguable that Watertown was Sinatra’s last truly great album.

SINATRA: ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL is an up-close and personal examination of the life, music and career of the legendary entertainer. Told in his own words from hours of archived interviews, along with commentary from those closest to him, the documentary weaves the music and images from Sinatra’s life together with rarely seen footage of Sinatra’s famous 1971 “Retirement Concert” in Los Angeles. The film’s narrative is shaped by Sinatra’s song choices for that concert, which Gibney interprets as the singer’s personal guide through his own life.
Focusing on Sinatra’s first 60 years – beginning with his birth in Hoboken, New Jersey and meteoric rise in his 20s – and drawing on comments from friends and family, as well as never-before-seen footage from home movies and concert performances, this unprecedented tribute to the beloved showman follows Sinatra’s growth from roadhouse performer to global singing sensation.
With the participation of the Frank Sinatra Estate, family members and archivists, SINATRA: ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL is an intimate portrait of the singer, actor, father, husband and philanthropist.

In many ways, Sinatra at the Sands is the definitive portrait of Frank Sinatra in the ’60s. Recorded in April of 1966, At the Sands is the first commercially released live Frank Sinatra album, recorded at a relaxed Las Vegas club show. For these dates at the Sands, Sinatra worked with Count Basie and his orchestra, which was conducted by Quincy Jones. Like any of his concerts, the material was fairly predictable, with his standard show numbers punctuated by some nice surprises. Throughout the show, Sinatra is in fine voice, turning in a particularly affecting version of “Angel Eyes.” He is also in fine humor, constantly joking with the audience and the band, as well as delivering an entertaining, if rambling, monologue halfway through the album. Some of the humor has dated poorly, appearing insensitive, but that sentiment cannot be applied to the music. Basie and the orchestra are swinging and dynamic, inspiring a textured, dramatic, and thoroughly enjoyable performance from Sinatra. (more…)
