After mastering the Sonatas and Partitas, Mario Brunello continues his trilogy devoted to reinterpreting Bach’s violin masterpieces on the violoncello piccolo. In this second volume he tackles the other great collection, the Sei Suonate a cembalo certato e violino solo (Six sonatas for concertato harpsichord and solo violin). Conceived in three parts, like sonatas for two treble instruments and continuo, these famous pieces appear transfigured here in a kaleidoscope of colours in which the violoncello piccolo intertwines with the keyboard, alternately harpsichord and organ, and with the bass doubled in turn by viola da gamba and cello – an accompaniment specifically suggested by one of the surviving copies of the sonatas. “A reinterpretation with an amber hue, in search of the intimate and human characteristics that are revealed almost unexpectedly in the slow movements and the expressiveness of the fugato themes in the fast movements, where Bach shows unparalleled virtuosity in distributing the voices”.

Dall Abaco was born in 1710 in Brussels, he followed in the footsteps of his father and studied music, showing such talent that at the age of 19 he was appointed cellist in the court orchestra of Prince Clemens August of Bavaria in Bonn, 10 years later becoming its Kapellmeister.

However certain forms of misbehaving ( a rowdy gossipmonger, swindler and gambler he was called..) he decided to try his luck elsewhere and he moved to Verona, where he became a respected musician and composer,a member of the Accademia Filarmonica.

Dall Abaco was one of the greatest cellists of his time. Few of his compositions survived, and his 11 Capriccios for cello solo are still in manuscript. Some passages are of unparalleled virtuosity, while the style is mostly the Empfindsame Stil, melancholy and expressive.

Francesco Galligioni is one of the foremost cellists in the field of Early Music. He regularly collaborates with the Venice Baroque Orchestra, Giuliano Carmignola, Andrea Marcon, John Eliot Gardiner, Federico Guglielmo and Diego Fasolis.

New to the catalogue, delightful chamber music by an Italian celebrity of 18th-century London.

Almost completely unknown now, the six Sonatas for transverse flute and basso continuo by Felice Giardini (1716-1796), published in London late in 1751, were the first works of their kind to appear in print by a composer working in England. Giardini had taken London by storm with the brilliance of his violin playing, and his success there seemed assured. They were also the first sonatas published for obbligato harpsichord and violin, as opposed to violin ‘solos’ with a basso continuo. In practice, the solo part was often taken by a flute, as we find on this superb new, historically informed recording.
