The Focusyear Band 21 is an international group of students with an exciting new project. These musicians include: Vocalist Tatjana Nova (from Dresden by way of Moscow); saxophonists Joshua Schofield (England) and Gianni Gagliardi (Spain); trumpeters/flugelhornists/valve trombonists Yakiv Tsvietinskyi (Ukraine) and Sebastián Greschuk (Argentina); pianist Lorenzo Vitolo (Italy); bassist Ethan Cohn (New York, by way of Montreal); and drummer Áron Tálas (Hungary). Ensemble members were selected from a large number of applications.

Charley Rose and Devin Daniels are saxophonists from France and the USA, born in 1985 and 1997. Rose studied with a broad musical interest in Amsterdam, Daniels studied at Berklee College in Boston and soon played with renowned jazz greats. The trumpeter Òscar Latorre was born in Catalonia in 1995 and released his first album as leader in 2017. Israeli trombonist Yossi Itskovich, born in 1970 and with a master’s degree from the Juillard School in New York, began playing jazz in 2006. Guitarist Fabio Gouvea, born in 1979, is Brazilian, won the Latin Grammy in 2018 as “best jazz album” with Hermeto Pascoal & Big Band and on the second album – with Pascoal as a guest – he is part of the band of 32-year-old compatriot and drummer Paulo Almeida. In 1992 in Boston the bassist Sebastián de Urquiza was born. He came to Argentina early, studied with Guillermo Klein and later in Los Angeles at the “Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz Performance”. In 2002 and at the age of twelve, Jean-Lou Treboux, a Swiss living in Barcelona, switched from drums to vibraphone, which he studied in Lausanne before moving to New York.

A Jazz scholarship which allows you to completely focus on music for a whole year without existence pressure, free from academic curricula, credits and exams, in an international band consisting of the most talented musicians and accompanied by globally outstanding personalities from the Jazz scene: This dream has become reality at a place which is globally unique to the world of Jazz – The Jazzcampus of the Musikhochschule/FHNW in Basel. The Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel is the initiator and leader of this extraordinary project, which is new to Europe, and which brings Jazz heavyweights such as Dave Holland, Avishai Cohen, Becca Stevens, Joshua Redman or Steve Swallow as band coaches every fortnight to the Jazzcampus.

The Focusyear Band 22, which is active on the jazz campus of the FHNW University of Music and the Musik-Akademie Basel, is also presenting itself internationally this year: for the first time two pianists, Julia Perminova from Russia and Yvonne Rogers from the USA, are playing in the band. The rhythm section will be complemented by Brazilian bassist Thiago Alves and Canadian drummer Aaron Dolman. The wind section consists of Alden Hellmuth (USA) and Roberto Nieva (Spain), both on alto saxophone, the Ukrainian trumpeter Dima Bondarev and the Spanish flautist and trombonist Fernando Brox.
