This Peter Green-led edition of the Mac isn’t just an important transition between their initial blues-based incarnation and the mega-pop band they became, it’s also their most vital, exciting version. The addition of Danny Kirwan as second guitarist and songwriter foreshadows not only the soft-rock terrain of “Bare Trees” and “Kiln House” with Christine Perfect-McVie, but also predicts Rumours. That only pertains to roughly half of the also excellent material here, though; the rest is quintessential Green. The immortal “Oh Well,” with its hard-edged, thickly layered guitars and chamber-like sections, is perhaps the band’s most enduring progressive composition. “Rattlesnake Shake” is another familiar number, a down-and-dirty, even-paced funk, with clean, wall-of-sound guitars. Choogling drums and Green’s fiery improvisations power “Searching for Madge,” perhaps Mac’s most inspired work save “Green Manalishi,” and leads into an unlikely symphonic interlude and the similar, lighter boogie “Fighting for Madge.” A hot Afro-Cuban rhythm with beautiful guitars from Kirwan and Green on “Coming Your Way” not only defines the Mac’s sound, but the rock aesthetic of the day. Of the songs with Kirwan’s stamp on them, “Closing My Eyes” is a mysterious waltz love song; haunting guitars approach surf music on the instrumental “My Dream”; while “Although the Sun Is Shining” is the ultimate pre-Rumours number someone should revisit. Blues roots still crop up on the spatial, loose, Hendrix-tinged “Underway,” the folky “Like Crying,” and the final outcry of the ever-poignant “Show Biz Blues,” with Green moaning “do you really give a damn for me?” Then Play On is a reminder of how pervasive and powerful Green’s influence was on Mac’s originality and individual stance beyond his involvement. Still highly recommended and a must-buy after all these years, it remains their magnum opus. [The 2013 reissue of the album features historical liner notes, remastered sound and sports the original UK track list. That means the slow blues ballad “Without You” and the grinding rocker “One Sunny Day” are added, with “Oh Well’ appearing as a bonus track along wtih the peaceful “World in Harmony” and the storming epic “The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown.)”]

With the pop sense of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks now leading the band, Fleetwood Mac moved completely away from blues and created this homage to love, Southern California-style. Each songwriter makes his or her presence known: Nicks for her dreamy, mystical reveries (“Dreams,” “Gold Dust Woman”); Christine McVie for her ultra-catchy slogans (“Don’t Stop”); and Buckingham for his deceptively simple pop songs (“Second Hand News,” “Go Your Own Way”). “The Chain,” written collectively, is the Mac at their most dramatic. But it’s the ensemble playing, the elastic rhythms, and lush harmonies that transform the material into classic FM fare.

He was a member of the Zoological Society and would spend hours at the zoo studying and watching the penguins.

Mystery to Me is the eighth studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac, originally released in October 1973. This was their last album to feature Bob Weston. Most of the songs were penned by guitarist/singer Bob Welch and keyboardist/singer Christine McVie, who were playing a major role in edging the band’s sound towards the radio-friendly pop-rock that would make them highly successful a few years later. Although the album only sold moderately and produced no hit singles, “Hypnotized” did become an FM radio staple for many years. In the wake of the Buckingham/Nicks led line-up’s success a few years later, it achieved Gold status in 1976.

Fleetwood Mac have announced an expanded reissue of their 1980 live album, Fleetwood Mac Live.

The new version, Fleetwood Mac Live: Super Deluxe Edition, will be released as a three-CD/two-LP collection featuring remastered versions of the original double album, along with more than an hour of unreleased live music from the band recorded between 1977 and 1982.

Most of Fleetwood Mac Live was originally recorded while the band toured the world in support of Tusk, their 1979 two-LP studio album. Three songs from that record made it onto Live – “Sara,” “Over and Over” and “Not That Funny” – while the rest of the LP was made up tunes from throughout the band’s distinguished career. Highlights included “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” “Don’t Stop” and a blistering rendition of “Rhiannon.”

The album also featured three new songs, including the single “Fireflies.”

Disc three of the new reissue is made up entirely of previously unreleased live versions of classic Fleetwood Mac tracks, including “Tusk,” “Gold Dust Woman,” “Songbird” and “The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown).” The set also includes a bonus 7″ single featuring previously unreleased demo versions of “Fireflies” and “One More Night.”

A booklet filled with rare photos, the band’s itinerary from the Tusk tour, plus a detailed history of the live album completes the set.

The full track listing for Fleetwood Mac Live: Super Deluxe Edition can be found below, along with and unreleased live performance of the group’s classic song “The Chain,” recorded in Cleveland in 1980.
