Chamber music meanders throughout Frank Martin’s career in a multitude of different ensembles and titles, ranging from the classical to the more unexpected, such as the Rhapsodie for string quintet with double bass, the Sonata da chiesa for viola d’amore and organ, the Ballade for trombone and piano or the Petite fanfare for brass sextet. Within this abundance, the composer approached only sparingly the most historically established genres. His only string quartet is a late work, his last chamber music piece. On the contrary, the Quintet for piano and strings and the Pavane couleur du temps are among his earliest contributions in this field.

Of the three composers on this album, the Estonian Jaan Rääts is surely less well-known to Western European audiences than Arvo Pärt or Henryk Górecki – even though the latter is mainly famous for a single work, the monumental Third Symphony which is far from representing the majority of his output. That said, this, Lerchenmusik – a pun, as “Lerche” is not only the German for skylark, but also the name of the dedicatee – has plenty in common with the famous symphony: a consistently slow tempo, in fact very, very slow; long, breathtaking, sombre chords; and a very substantial theme. The work for clarinet, cello and piano was written in 1985 in a similar vein: perhaps Górecki had grasped what his audiences liked about his language, at least in terms of symphonies: that is, the incantatory, quasi-religious quality. So why disappoint his public? Pärt, for his part, contributes the Mozart-Adagio in memory of Oleg Kagan, in a first version for violin, cello and piano: the revision was made specifically for the musicians on this recording. The composer took a slow movement from the Mozart and put it through several harmonic and thematic metamorphoses. Finally, the Kaleidoskoopilised etüüdid by Jaan Rääts are presented here as a discographic world-first. Their “kaleidoscopic” aspect is created by juxtaposing short thematic, rhythmic, or instrumental cells, like so many minimalist fragments, all jumbled together: just like the effect of looking through a kaleidoscope.

By the time Beethoven came to compose the last three of his 32 piano sonatas, written, he said, “in a single breath” and conceived as a unified whole, he was almost completely deaf. Dense and complex, these innovative works, marking indelibly his farewell to the genre, pose many challenges, which are taken up here with mastery by Fabrizio Chiovetta. His performance, nurtured by a strong musical maturity and a deep understanding of the score, echoes to the greatness of these works as Fabrizio Chiovetta takes us into the mystery of Beethoven’s genius.

This programme, carefully chosen from amongst the hundreds of works by the composer, starts first with the French Overture in B minor: a monumental, complex work, rarely performed in concert. It was during a recital by Grigory Sokolov that Chiovetta fell in love with this pièce. He next chose one of the fundamental pieces that marks the culmination of the suite genre: the sublime Partita No.1 in B flat major. He concludes with the English Suite No.4, with the wish of restoring some of the honour it deserves.
