The discography of Eugene Ormandy lists the entirety of the discographic recordings in the studio of the conductor Eugene Ormandy.

Born in Hungary in 1899, Ormandy emigrated to the United States in the early 1920s. He made his first discographic recordings as a violinist. Called to conduct orchestras in New York and then in Minneapolis, it is at the head of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra that Ormandy recorded his first records as conductor in 1934 for the RCA Victor label. Taking over from Leopold Stokowski as musical director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1936-1938, in 1943 he signed an exclusive contract with the CBS company. Between 1951 and 1961, following the reciprocal distribution agreement between CBS and Philips, many of Eugene Ormandy’s records were released in Europe under the Philips label. He returned to RCA in 1968 and made his last recordings in the late 1970s at EMI. He retired in 1980 and died in 1985.

As to the music, these orchestral arrangements by Arthur Harris are all boisterously spirited, almost driving into coarseness on some occasions, but each are quite different from one another, providing a well-rounded program.

Among the 23 German documents included in UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” list, there are but two musical manuscripts: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor. The second one – an immense work of sacred music – is both exceptional and paradoxical among all those composed by the cantor of Leipzig. Written in the hope of securing the post of the court composer for the king of Poland and Lithuania, Elector of Saxony Augustus III, seems to crown Bach’s body of work, being a summa of his artistic mastery – paradoxically, as it is a Catholic mass, while Bach is one of the greatest composers of Lutheran sacred music.

Longtime Philadelphia Orchestra conductor Eugene Ormandy (born Jenó Blau) developed what came to be known as the “Philadelphia Sound.” (He groused that it should be called the “Ormandy Sound,” even though its fundamentals had already been established during Leopold Stokowski’s long tenure with the Philadelphia Orchestra.) Largely as an effort to overcome the dry acoustics of the orchestra’s home, the Academy of Music, Ormandy emphasized lush string sonorities and, often, legato phrasing and rounded tone. He was lauded even by his own musicians for his ability to conduct everything from memory, even complex contemporary scores. Still, aside from the voluptuous tone, Ormandy’s interpretations rarely bore an individual stamp. They were, however, highly polished, intelligently balanced, and well paced, always serving the scores honorably, and often with a dash of controlled excitement.

If you love the music of the great American symphonists, get this disc. John Vincent’s Symphonic Poem After Descartes and Symphony in D are not only better than anything Hanson, Harris, and Piston ever turned out, they are as good as the best symphonic works of the middle years of the twentieth century, as good as the symphonies of Stravinsky, Hindemith, Walton, or Martinu. That his music is as tonal as Brahms’ matters far less than that it is strongly argued, profoundly expressive, extraordinarily brilliant, and completely compelling. Eugene Ormandy was compelled: he not only premiered the Symphony in D, he recorded it and then commissioned, premiered, and recorded the Symphonic Poem After Descartes. And apparently Ormandy compelled the Philadelphia Orchestra because the 1957 and 1959 recordings of the works are among the best they ever made together: virtuosic, voluptuous, and altogether virtuous. If you love the music of Victory at Sea, get this disc. Norman Dello Joio’s music for Air Power is just as bombastic, just as corny, just as patriotic, and just as instantly – some might say irritatingly – memorable. Albany’s remastering of Columbia’s original stereo recordings is at least as good as all but the very best digital recordings.
