Inspired by a trip to Paris in late 1957, Erroll Garner entered the studio in the spring of 1958 to create his own impressions of the city, which were presented on the LP Erroll Garner in Paris (Philips B 07375 L). Garner is showcased here leading his trio, which featured bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin. The material consists of familiar French favorites such as Édith Piaf’s “La Vie en Rose,” Paris-related songs such as Jerome Kern’s “The Last Time I Saw Paris” and Cole Porter’s “I Love Paris,” plus several original compositions.

‘That’s My Kick’ was Erroll Garner’s first traditional studio album in five years and perhaps his most ambitious album ever as a composer. The selections were surely inspired by the new array of musicians assembled for the sessions, including percussionist José Mangual, who would go on to play with Garner for rest of his career. The electric atmosphere captured on tape here is at times raucous and always palpably joyful.

Erroll Garner was one of the great American Jazz pianists of the 20th century, yet very few know his name or his music. Ready Take One is the first completely new Garner studio album in nearly 25 years. Ready Take One features six never before released original Garner compositions, including the infectious “Wild Music” and beautiful ballad, “Back To You”. Recorded during a prolific five-year period beginning in 1967, all 14 songs on Ready Take One are previously unreleased, having only recently been discovered after nearly 50 years.

With the help of the label Mack Avenue, Octave Music pursues its publishing of brand new or rare recordings from Erroll Garner, with this time a live at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on November 7, 1964 called Nightconcert. Helped by Eddie Calhoun’s double bass and Kelly Martin’s drums, the pianists covers here gems drawn from the Great American Songbook. We may have heard a thousand times Over the Rainbow, Night And Day, My Funny Valentine, On Green Dolphin Street or Laura, we definitely enjoy them once again thanks to this jazz whose swing has been magnified. And as always with Garner, offering such a wide palette of colors with only three people is nothing short of a miracle. We go from a chamber intimacy to virtuoso fireworks, from stripped-down subtleties to rhythmic uppercuts. A more fitting title for this album does not exist. It is yet another example of just how well Erroll Garner knew and understood himself and his music. Perhaps his greatest talent was an ability to distill and communicate precisely who he was at any given moment. Here we find him perfectly embodying the definition of his sun sign. Whatever your views on astrology might be, all that is left to do is listen.

The Octave Remastered Series is a historic year-long, 12-album project featuring newly restored and expanded editions of classic Erroll Garner releases from the 1960s and 1970s. Each album contains a newly discovered, unreleased bonus track. The newly minted bonus tracks in the series are all Garner originals, eight of the 12 being previously unreleased compositions. Utilizing the Plangent Process playback system for analog tape, these new transfers were remastered and, when needed, remixed by the Grammy winning Garner team.
