Mozart’s piano concertos form a set that is not just exceptional but absolutely unique in the history of music: from No. 9 to No. 27, all are definitive masterpieces. According to H.C. Robbins Landon, an eminent specialist in the composer’s life and work, ‘It is above all their immense stylistic diversity that places Mozart’s piano concertos above and beyond those of his contemporaries’. What these scores also share is their position at a crossroads for strongly impacting influences: that of the symphony, encouraging Mozart to make lavish use of the orchestra; the wind bands of the Imperial court, shaping his enhanced role for the woodwinds; and the influence of the opera, whose styles he worked into these concertos, often treating the dialogue between piano and orchestra as if they were stage characters. In this new recording, Eric Le Sage is joined by the Gävle Symfoniorkester to perform the 17th and 24th concertos for piano and orchestra by the Salzburg composer.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Beethoven was one of the first composers to reveal the expressive and technical qualities of the cello, both in his symphonic works and in his chamber music. Some illustrious predecessors (Bach, Geminiani or Vivaldi) had already worked on the creation of an autonomous repertoire of concertos and sonatas for the cello, but Beethoven transformed the former instrument of accompaniment and support of the continuo into a true partner of a music based on dialogue, exchange, and contrast.

The SWR called him a “magician”, the Tagespiegel compared him to Pan, the Greek god of flute playing. Without a doubt, there is hardly anyone who can hold a candle to the flutist Emmanuel Pahud in his field. On his album Romances, together with pianist Eric Le Sage, he delves into the world of Romanticism: a great musical passion within his wide-ranging repertoire, which extends from the Baroque to the modern.

These are top-notch performances of not always top-notch music. The piano quintets of Mozart and Beethoven need no special pleading, and this international ensemble are at their best in the dreamy opening and the finale’s cadenza of the Mozart. The French timbre characterised by Franois Leleux’s plangent oboe sounds well suited to Poulenc’s racy sextet and the fine one-movement Divertissement by Roussel. More dispensable are Louise Farrenc’s amiable sextet, a pioneering work of 1852, and Andr Caplet’s oddly irritating quintet of 1899. The third disc has a sextet by Strauss’s friend Ludwig Thuille, boldly symphonic in scope, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s extremely enjoyable, bubbly quintet. But are eight piano-and-wind works in succession just too much of a good thing?

This final instalment in this complete recording of Gabriel Fauré’s chamber music features his compositions for violin and piano. Eric Le Sage and Daishin Kashimoto, concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, give us a particularly convincing and moving interpretation of these intimist works, thanks to a complicity polished in the course of numerous collaborations in concert.

Gabriel Fauré was 30 when he began his first violin sonata in the summer of 1875. Not until four decades later, when he was director of the Paris Conservatoire, would he get round to a second sonata. More than an anthological disc, the present volume paints the portrait of a life, bearing witness to the change in civilization between the waning 19th century and the coming upheavals of the 20th.

This last volume brings to a close a complete recording of reference, based on Eric Le Sage’s capacity for federating first-rank artists around him. This original approach was hailed by the international critics for his first complete recording, devoted to Schumann.

In a genre set by Boccherini and represented in the nineteenth century by the masterpieces of Schumann, Brahms and Franck, Gabriel Fauré composed two scores that were very different from his early romances and the evanescent ‘lullaby ofdeath’ that is the Requiem. The Piano Quintet op. 89 remains little known, for reasons related to its composition as much as to its history. Regarded by Koechlin a some of Fauré’s finest work, it serves as a transition to the composer’s final stylistic period. Opus 115, surprisingly less melancholy than its predecessor, is one ofthe composer’s last productions. In the evening of his life Faure demonstrated his supreme mastery and prodigious creative power, giving French chamber music, which he served so well, one of its finest monuments.

Following the successful edition of Schumann’s complete works, Eric Le Sage and Alpha have decided to produce a new series of 5 CD’s dedicated to Gabriel Fauré’s complete works for chamber music with piano. This series in general and its first volume in particular, constitute a milestone in Alpha’s development as they are the first of a line devoted to music from the post-Mozart period. Each volume will be placed in the literary context of the time in which it was created through fragments taken from novels, poems or the correspondence of artists. Eric Le Sage will work on this series together with François Salque with whom he shares a great musical affinity. Sound engineer Jean-Marc Laisné (who recorded the integral works of Schumann) will record the pieces in the auditorium of Grenoble, a hall famous for its acoustics. Through the combination of their talents, these men will breathe new life into these well known pieces.

With their poetry, their passonate and intimate lyricism, their refined style that gradually reveals hidden depths, the thirteen Nocturnes of Gabriel Fauré are the most significant group of works in his oeuvre for solo piano.

Composed over a period of forty-six years (between 1875 and 1821), they bear witness to the composer’s remarkable stylistic evolution. From a form of expression rooted in romanticism, to an aesthetic fully aligned with 20th-century modernity, Fauré can be said to have shaped his musical personality like a sculptor. His Nocturnes are not all of equal importance, but as a whole their diversity and development offer a perfect panorama of his art.

Éric Le Sage, one of the French piano school’s main representatives, whose many recordings for Alpha include the complete chamber music of Fauré, here interprets the repertoire closest to his heart.

The most famous and innovative of these are represented: Schoenberg with his Kammersymphonie no.1, Mahler with two lieder transcribed for flute and piano, Zemlinsky’s Clarinet Trio and several pieces by Berg. A programme that encapsulates both the exhaustion of a bygone Romantic age and the avant-garde promises of a modern world still to be built.

Eminent representative of the French piano school, the pianist Eric Le Sage offers a new album in the form of a poetic walk in the secret gardens of 22 French composers of the late 19th and early 20th century.

Between the Belle Époque and the Roaring Twenties, around two world wars that had to be healed, in the vertigo of all the rebirths and that of progress on the march, music also needed calm, humanity and natural intimacy. While twenty-two French composers cultivate their secret soul, in a few piano miniatures, electricity, the gramophone, the little queen, the Parisian metro … are already inviting themselves into people’s daily lives.
