“This CD has a very special meaning for me. Remembering Chet takes me back to 1979 when I first met him. That meeting would soon prove to be a turning point in my musical life. Playing together, sharing concerts or recording sessions with him allowed me to be in close contact with an artist of rare jazz experience who caused an enormous change in my playing. Many of the tunes on this CD come from those important years of collaboration. Among them are Soft Journey, Fairy Flowers and Brown Cat Dance, which I composed expressly for Chet and which, like Night bird, are included in “Soft Journey”, recorded at the end of 1979, just after our first meeting. The opening track, From E. to C., as the title clearly suggests, is a dedication to Chet and also dates to our first period of collaboration, whereas Echoes was recorded later in 1987, as a part of “Silence,” a CD under Charlie Haden’s name.

Enrico Pieranunzi is certainly the only pianist of the music scene who can claim a double filiation jazz and classical. In addition to André Ceccarelli and Diego Imbert, he published in 2016 his album “ménage à trois” which illustrates the coexistence of his wife (classical music) and his mistress (Jazz). After the international success of “ménage à trois”, it was therefore natural for Enrico Pieranunzi, surrounded by these same musical accomplices, to study the work of Claude Debussy on the occasion of the commemoration of the centenary of the disappearance. last on March 25th. “Voyage In Time” (a suite in nine movements) is conceived in the likeness of the suites of dances typical of the Baroque era. Some titles (Minuet, Courante, Pavane) may surprise the listener who associates our names with Jazz music. It is certainly true that our three previous albums together were Jazz albums. However, this fourth encounter – our second album for Challenge Records, after Common View (2020) – is a completely different recording, both in terms of line-up and material. The movements, composed by Jasper and arranged together during our recording session, reflect our shared love of classical music and combine classical forms with a very open improvisational approach. The result is a sort of journey back and forth between the musical language of our time and of times past. A very special Voyage In Time, in fact, in which you are all invited to take part.

Fanatique du trio piano/basse/batterie, Enrico Pieranunzi inaugure ici une nouvelle association avec deux autres pointures du jazz européen : le batteur français André Ceccarelli et le contrebassiste danois Thomas Fonnesbæk. À 72 ans passés, le grand pianiste, qu’on qualifie souvent de meilleur héritier transalpin de Bill Evans, est comme boosté par la vigueur de cette rythmique inédite. La poésie de son jeu comme sa virtuosité jamais surchargée possèdent toujours cette élégance bien à lui. Pieranunzi est l’homme de la note juste, de la note soupesée, de la note nécessaire. Jamais de gras dans cette musique fluide qui, si elle aime flirter avec une certaine forme de romantisme, n’abuse jamais de son potentiel émotionnel, voire lacrymal. Ici, le pianiste romain épure même son jeu encore plus qu’à son habitude… Tout au long de Something Tomorrow, sorti sur l’illustre label danois Storyville Records, le swing, le vrai, n’est jamais relégué au second plan. On bat la mesure avec le pied, on se laisse happer par la complicité entre les trois hommes et on sourit à chaque prise de solo. Bref, la pochette de ce disque mériterait un bon vieux coup de tampon, « classe et classique », à l’image de l’impeccable version de This Is New de Kurt Weill et Ira Gershwin qui le referme.
