A year after the legendary drummer Elvin Jones left the John Coltrane Quartet, he found a steady gig at Pookie’s Pub, a relatively short-lived jazz venue in New York City. Jones was in the process of establishing himself as a bandleader, and for several months in 1967, he led groups with a variety of different lineups at the small club.

Drummer Elvin Jones may have been breaking down new rhythmic boundaries at the time with John Coltrane’s Quartet but his own sessions as a leader were not all that innovative. This quartet set with altoist Charlie Mariano, bassist Richard Davis and either Roland Hanna or Hank Jones on piano is an example of how the avant-garde of the era was starting to influence the more mainstream players. The music is in general safe but enjoyable with the virtuosic bassist Richard Davis often taking solo honors on what was in reality a modern bop date.

Within a few years of leaving the John Coltrane Quartet, Elvin Jones became a very important bandleader. Due to his consistent brilliance and mastery of polyrhythms, the drummer always inspired his sidemen, bringing out a raw intensity in their playing that was not often heard in other settings.

Produced by Duke Pearson, this 1968 date for Blue Note finds the master drummer in a pianoless trio with Joe Farrell (tenor & soprano saxophone, flute) and Jimmy Garrison (bass) performing a well balanced 6-track set comprised of three Garrison originals (“What Is This?,” “Ascendant,” “Sometimes Joie”), one from Farrell (“In the Truth”) and a pair of standards (“Yesterdays,” “We’ll Be Together Again”).

Inexcusably, there are no date or personnel listings on this LP from Blue Note’s declining years, but the music is generally quite worthwhile, if a bit eclectic. The personnel changes throughout the session, despite all the performances being apparently recorded on the same day. The great drummer Elvin Jones is joined by the reeds of David Liebman, Steve Grossman and Joe Farrell; baritonist Pepper Adams is also on two numbers, keyboardists Chick Corea and Jan Hammer generally alternate (although they both appear on a few tunes together), guitarist Yoshiaki Masuo has guest appearances on two songs, and most selections include bassist Gene Perla and percussionist Don Alias. The group mostly plays concise versions of band originals, including Corea’s classic “La Fiesta.” An interesting set, but Elvin Jones has recorded many more rewarding albums. –Scott Yanow

Live at the Lighthouse is a live album by jazz drummer Elvin Jones featuring performances recorded in 1972 at the Lighthouse Café in California, and released on the Blue Note label.

Drummer Elvin Jones’ 45th birthday (September 9, 1972) was a good excuse to record his group of the period. The results were originally released as a double-LP and have been reissued as two CDs with over an hour of new music added. Jones’ pianoless quartet features two masterful saxophonists (both doubling on tenor and soprano) who at the time sounded very close to John Coltrane. Dave Liebman and Steve Grossman were among the first young saxophonists not closely associated with Coltane who used his style as a starting point in their search for their own musical identities. Their high-powered and sometimes rowdy flights are consistently stimulating. With Gene Perla’s alert, sensitive, and inventive bass holding the unit together, Elvin Jones was able to play as free as he desired. The first volume (taken from three sets at the Lighthouse) has six fiery selections, four of which were previously unreleased.

One listen to Elvin Jones’ Genesis will leave many listeners asking “How did I miss this record?” In 1971, the great years of Blue Note were in the past but the label was still recording superb sessions. The difference was that it often took years for the best recordings to be released and they were being overshadowed by more commercial sets from the label. Genesis fell through the cracks, making it one of the most exciting passed-over records from the late Blue Note period. Dave Liebman, Frank Foster and Joe Farrell, three brilliant and competitive saxophonists, battle it out on these performances with Elvin Jones setting a fire under every solo. Jones makes sure that not only is the fuse never put out but the music is absolutely explosive. Do not miss this remarkable recording!

A change of direction brings about the next phase of development as documented on this session from 1970. Coalition with Frank Foster and George Coleman packing a strong two-tenor punch on four originals, another number finding Foster utilizing the seldom heard alto clarinet. The divergent styles work well, with Foster’s “boss” horn strutting alongside the Lestorian strains of Coleman. In Coalition the creative group was able to display a great hard bop sound.

Elvin Jones is one of the most influential drummers in jazz, not least because of his longtime collaboration with John Coltrane. A few years ago, Rolling Stone listed Jones as the 23rd best drummer of all time. The previously unreleased recordings, now released as “Revival: Live at Pookie’s Pub,” show Jones’ reinvention as a leader two weeks after Coltrane’s death, recorded live in July 1967 in New York City with saxophonist Joe Farrell, pianist Billy Greene and bassist Wilbur Little.
