Elisabeth Leonskaja feels life, people and music intuitively. Long standing friendships and continuous work on certain repertoire, like the Schubert Piano Sonatas, define the essence of her being. She doesn’t give up and looks for answers only in herself. Just like life, music is a pilgrimage. There is a spiritual goal and one should keep an open heart and listen to one’s own intuition, in order to advance, stay inwardly healthy and grow on this path. For her 70th birthday, eaSonus releases Leonskaja’s Schubert of today. Her Schubert breaths and conveys five decades of presence on stage, during which she always felt a great responsibility to her public. The big book format of this release (280mm/280mm) contains 4 Audio CDs with the last eight piano sonatas (D 784 till D 960), a Bonus DVD with a Mozart/Grieg two pianos program, in Memoriam and together at the piano with Sviatoslav Richter and a book with texts and 65 personal photographs about her life, her path in music and her thoughts about music, about Schubert as well as about Richter, her role model and friend.

It is with great happiness that we accompany Elisabeth Leonskaja’s pilgrimage and hope very much that this birthday present will make many even happier.

Elisabeth Leonskaja is a highly respected (former Soviet) pianist whose career blossomed in the shadow of Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels. Known for her modesty – not unlike older compatriot Maria Yudina – Leonskaja was mentored by Richter and often played duets with him. She would never reach the critical and artistic heights of her great teacher, but her reputation as an imaginative interpreter and formidable technician have lifted her to almost legendary status, with comparisons to Clara Haskil and other keyboard icons. Her choice of repertory has been fairly conservative over the years, with staples in the concerto and solo genres by Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and with much chamber music. In the latter realm, she has collaborated with the Alban Berg and Borodin quartets, with the Vienna Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble, with cellist Heinrich Schiff, and many other artists. Leonskaja has made numerous recordings with a variety of labels, including Melodiya, Teldec, Elektra, MD&G, and others. Leonskaja was born on November 23, 1945, in Tbilisi, Georgia, to Russian parents. She was an exceptionally gifted child, giving her first concert at 11. She studied music at the Moscow Conservatory and, while there, won prizes in several prestigious international competitions, including the Queen Elizabeth, Marguerite Long, and Enescu. Leonskaja was soon noticed by Richter and the two developed what would be a lifelong friendship, often appearing together in duet concerts. In 1978 she emigrated to the West, settling in Vienna. Her debut at the 1979 Salzburg Festival was a great triumph, after which she quickly established a reputation that yielded invitations in the next decades from the leading orchestras abroad, including those in New York, Cleveland, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Leipzig, and Hamburg. Leonskaja’s recordings were drawing acclaim as well: her 1992 CD of Brahms’ sonatas won Belgium’s prestigious Caecilia Prize. In 1996 Teldec released what would be one of Richter’s last recordings, duet sonatas by Mozart and Grieg, with Leonskaja. Richter died the following year. In the new century Leonskaja has been very active on the concert scene with numerous appearances at major concert venues. She debuted at Carnegie Hall in November 2006 with Kurt Masur leading the London Philharmonic Orchestra in an acclaimed performance of the challenging Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2. Among her later recordings is another highly praised Brahms CD, this one an MD&G release of piano music from Opp. 116-119.

Over the years, long-time collaborators Elisabeth Leonskaja (pianist) and Tugan Sokhiev (conductor) have developed an artistic partnership that has frequently brought them together with the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse. Sokhiev had the pleasure of being the appointed music director from 2008 until 2022 when he was forced to resign for political reasons due to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

Her almost legendary modesty still makes her somewhat media-shy today. Yet as soon as she walks out on the stage, audiences can sense the force behind the fact that music is and always has been her life’s work.

 Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, to a Russian family, she gave her first concerts as early as age 11. Her exceptional talent soon brought her to study at the Moscow Conservatory.

The concept lying behind pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja’s new recording entitled “Saudade” stems from no set of musicological ideas; nor does it have any programmatic basis. Instead, it derives from an emotional state or feeling. Therein lies its argument and the justification for this programme. The composers and their particular works presented here are deservedly important and carry out an especially meaningful role. Yet, it is the feeling which is important here, and it is the unifying theme of what is the most personal (so far) of the Russian pianist’s recording projects.

From the early 1800s to the end of the 1960s, Paris was the focal city of the arts world par excellence. Born on November 23, 1945 in Tbilisi to a family of Polish and Russian (on her father’s side) and Jewish (on her mother’s side) origin, her parents evacuated to Tbilisi from Odessa at the beginning of the war. She gave her first concert with an orchestra at the age of 11, and a solo concert at the age of thirteen.

Now the Grande Dame of the piano has recorded the entire piano sonatas of the Austrian. As varied as Mozart’s sonatas are, they actually seem to encompass the moods of a whole life: they range from the seriously innocent piano sonata in F major KV 332 to the lively dance work KV 333 to the energetic Rondo alla Turca, probably Mozart’s most famous piano piece. But the composer also processed personal experiences in the works. Thus, the piano sonata in A minor KV 310 is Mozart’s most gloomy sonata, it was created under the impression of the unexpected death of the mother.
