The heyday of English consort music coincided with the exciting shift in musical style between 1580 and 1630 from the renaissance to the early baroque period. William Byrd and his successors made their mark with sacred and secu- lar songs, fantasies and dances. Honouring the 400th anni- versary of William Byrd’s death, this album displays the diversity and richness in colour of consort music. On the one hand, English composers employed a strikingly sophisticated writing style, whilst on the other hand taking up popular music of their time. The results were atmos- pheric musical pictures reflecting the deep melancholy, pious confidence and full-bodied joie de vivre of Shakespeare’s era.

The recordings for this release were made in the middle of the pandemic under difficult conditions. The hope of the artists involved is to make their contribution so that culture will emerge from this crisis not weakened, but strengthened. “Art is a daughter of freedom, and from the necessity of spirits, not from the necessity of matter, it wants to receive its prescription” (Schiller). Reinhold Friedrich, a prolific performer on major stages around the world, is a professor of trumpet at Karlsruhe, a sought-after lecturer for master classes, honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid and also in Hiroshima. Many of his recordings were awarded international prizes and got high press acclaim.

Königsberg in East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia) was a rare haven of peace during the Thirty Years’ War thanks to its geographical location. Many people, including artists and musicians, fled there from the horrors of plague and war. Heinrich Albert, a pupil of Heinrich Schütz (his cousin) and Johann Hermann Schein, the Thomaskantor in Leipzig, was appointed cathedral organist in the city in 1630. His garden hut, overgrown with pumpkin vines and suitably dubbed the ‘pumpkin hut’ (Kürbishütte), became the meeting place of the Königsberg Circle of Poets: a refuge and a space for cutting-edge creativity, spared from direct involvement in the war.

The Boreas Quartett Bremen and soprano Dorothee Mields bring a little-known musical manuscript of the renaissance to life and present a series of premiere recordings. The Basevi Codex, a collection of Franco-Flemish chansons, motets and mass settings, was produced during the early sixteenth century in the famous music scribing workshop of Pierre Alamire. Faithfully following renaissance performance practice, which allowed great freedom in its musical realisations, the recorder consort and Dorothee Mields interpret selected pieces from the codex, with voice or purely instrumental, and, depending on the character of the piece, also with improvised virtuoso ornamentation. This creates a colourful picture of the music as it was sung and played at the Burgundian-Dutch court of Princess Margaret of Austria in Mechelen.

On her new Album, the outstanding Baroque soprano presented together with the Swiss early music Ensemble “The Friday Academy,” works for soprano and chamber music by Georg Friedrich Handel. “Handel’s Tea time “combines the two cantatas” Venus & Adonis “and” Mi palpita il cor “with instrumental works as well as excerpts from the” 24 English Songs “and the”9 German Arias”. The cantatas are magnificent examples of Handel’s art of expression, celebrating the human singing voice. The cantata” Venus & Adonis ” HWV 85 is probably Handel’s first composition in English. The cantata “Mi palpita il cor” HWV 132b, on the other hand, was written in Italy, but Handel revised it in his time in London. Handel also found time in Vocal Music for more intimate genres and forms of expression beyond the grandiose Arias and choruses. Thus over the years the “24 English Songs” and “9 German Arias”were created. The programme is rounded off by a” Concerto a quattro ” and a Trio Sonata for Oboe and strings. In addition, the “Air and Five Variations” for harpsichord give an idea of what an incredible keyboard virtuoso Handel must have been. As a tribute to Henry Purcell, who had made London an opera metropolis before Handel, an aria from his Semi-opera “The Fairy Queen”is heard at the end of the album.
