This album was successful. Two singles from this album were also successful. The most successful was “Rings of Gold”, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Country charts in 1969. All the songs in this album are duets, both with Gibson and West. “Rings of Gold” helped Dottie West’s career, because it became her biggest hit up to that point. It also revitalized Don Gibson’s career as a solo artist. The other single from the album, “Sweet Memories” was a Top 40 hit, reaching No. 32. Their duet partnership would last into the next year, with another Top 10 hit, but they never recorded another album together. This album reached No. 21 on the “Top Country Albums” chart in 1969.

If you happen to find yourself in one of those “blue-blue-day-heartbreak-who-cares-what-about-lonesome-me” moods and you want some music to help you wallow in your depression, Don Gibson’s your man. Feeling sorry for himself was Don’s specialty and as a singer and songwriter he made quite a name exploring the depths of self-pity, piling up a big stack of hits in the process. Also, in a slightly less drastic mindset, he composed a couple of sad songs that found long-lasting impact in the pop culture mainstream, one through a version by a blind, multitalented rhythm and blues singer, the other by way of an unusually gifted vocalist who died before her time.

This record focuses more on Gibson the performer and less on his work as a songwriter. Gibson certainly has a way with a song, even one he didn’t write. Just listen to how much he gets out of Jeannie Seely’s 1966 hit, “Don’t Touch Me” as he bends and weaves his way through the melody.
