In each composition on his new album “Here And Now”, pianist and composer Dirk Maassen processes special life situations. The first ride on the metro in Paris after the pandemic, the farewell to a loved one; each composition deals with a stage on life’s journey. Experiences in the here and now meet wistful distance and the repeated prelude to a determined continuation.

These experiences and thoughts form the starting point for Dirk Maassen’s twelve compositions, which come together as in a dream to form an emotional journey.

The soundtrack to the documentary film “Schattenkind” is Dirk Maassen’s first film music album and already a mammoth project. For this, the composer and pianist accompanied the film crew around director Jo Müller for two years and transformed scenic impressions into emotional musical moods. With his reduced piano melodies, which he sometimes arranges with subtle string passages, Dirk Maassen sensitively creates a tonal contrast to the poignant images from the 90-minute documentary film.

The Album “Echoes” by Pianist and composer Dirk Maassen is inspired by encounters with his Fans. It is about the power of music to express feelings and connect people across spatial and temporal boundaries. Dirk Maassen has been keeping a musical diary for a long time. In it, he writes down the particularly memorable experiences in melodies. Many encounters with his fans have particularly touched him and inspired him to think about music as a means of communication. Feelings, sensations and experiences resonate in music, and people can experience deep connectedness even when they are separated from each other. Dirk Maassen has inspired this power to overcome space and time to reduced and, as it were, touching piano pieces, some of which he complements with orchestral arrangements.

Composer/pianist Dirk Maassen’s Avalanche feels anthemic throughout. The opening “Eclipse,” a beautifully undulating piece that sways to its own natural rhythm, is a rock song in miniature, while the richly scored “Allewind” is full of tense, urgent drama. “Helios,” featuring sound artist Max Knoth and string orchestra accompaniment, harks back to Nyman’s score for the 1993 film The Piano, and “Nocturne” pays homage to the simple romance of the theme from Love Story. But while this is an album of many influences, Maassen, a master pianist, assimilates and crafts them into his own stunning, original whole.

For his new album “Time” Dirk Maassen has retreated to a remote mountain hut to find his inner melody and his true “I” in solitude and silence.

The pianist and composer, who also works as a software developer, sees the coming to rest of body and mind as the key to the emergence of new musical ideas. “Working on new music takes time and space, and you have to be patient and listen to yourself,” explains Dirk Maassen. In search of tranquility, he spent several weeks in South Tyrol, where he had only the company of his piano and the breathtaking views of the mountain wilderness for inspiration. On extended walks, Dirk Maassen found himself. “Living in the mountains reduces everything to its true essence and this simple, basic world opens up so much space to find one’s true self” he explains. In this environment, Maassen was able to find his “inner melody” and let it naturally rise into consciousness: “then everything comes together and something magical happens.
