With The Good Life, released in 2016 and for which he took a dip in the Great American Songbook, Till Brönner was at his zenith. The German trumpet player and singer penned an album of smooth classics, leaning toward love songs, which he revisited with elegance and sophistication. With Nightfall, Brönner joins forces with his old accomplice, double bass player Dieter Ilg, to revisit once again the music of great authors. Except that this time, the program couldn’t be more eclectic: from the Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby to Leonard Cohen’s A Thousand Kisses Deep, to Johann Sebastian Bach, Ornette Coleman and Jerome Kern, the duo has tackled a large repertoire. But the virtuosity shared by the two musicians allows them to make the whole project homogeneous. They most of all find a very sensual language. Each note is weighted and the silences and spaces are never forgotten. In short, this Nightfall is the incarnation of elegance.

Mein Beethoven is a logical next step for Dieter Ilg, called one of the best double bassists in the world. His previous chamber jazz album included a whispered theme from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (“Ode to Joy”). On this album, he has satisfied his yearning by recording an entire album dedicated to the most classical of all our composers. Ilg and his perfectly harmonizing trio demonstrate that he is not about gimmicky “jazz goes classic” crossover music, but about taking the originals and somehow making them his own. His incorruptible eye for the essence, making the monumental sensual and human, is impressive.

“Dedication” finds Germany’s renowned double bassist alone in the studio. For this recording, Dieter Ilg preferred not to pre-plan or pre-determine anything, but rather to create music in the moment in an intimate dialogue with his instrument. The idea might seem challenging but the results are totally compelling: Dieter Ilg’s solo album is a homage to people who have left their mark on him, to some fellow musicians, and to the strong imperatives that have made him the man and the musician he is. “Dedication” is a manifesto for the freedom of jazz and at the same time a declaration of the special affection he feels for his low-frequency friend and companion.

‘Mein Beethoven’ is the logical next step for Dieter Ilg. His last album ‘Parsifal’ – a chamber-jazz interpretation of Richard Wagner’s sacred festival work, which Focus magazine called a ‘highlight in the Richard Wagner Year 2013’ – closed with a whispered theme from Beethoven’s Ninth (‘Ode to Joy’), retitled ‘Sehnsucht’ (Longing) by Ilg. Now he has satisfied that yearning and recorded an entire album, ‘Mein Beethoven’, dedicated to this Olympian of German classical music, the most classical of all our composers, the one-time ‘superstar of the music capital Vienna’: Ludwig van Beethoven.
