“Empath Live In America”, the third part of the Devolution series, is a document of the tour, which was canceled at the beginning of 2020. As Devin explains, “This tour marked a ‘freeform’ version of the material. There were no backing tracks, click tracks or even a setlist, so every evening was unique and different. The audience shouted wishes to us and we just joined in. The material was therefore interpreted in a unique way, and the experience was a very special musical evening”. Featuring a stripped down version of the “Order of Magnitude” tape, this release captures a raw and crazy performance.

Townsend: “So what is The Puzzle?.. well, its not technically my new record, it’s more a collaborative, multimedia art project that acts as a stopgap between Empath and the next record, Lightwork (due out in March of next year on Inside Out Records). The Puzzle includes two ‘soundtracks’ of sorts (the highly orchestrated ‘Puzzle’ and the very chill ‘Snuggles’) along with a film, graphic novel, novel, and a huge amount of multimedia. It includes many artists (upwards of 50) that participated via Zoom during the pandemic and the experience gave me a chance to purge and be completely creatively free. As such, it is a stream of conscious, and very abstract collection of music that includes a narrative (in the form of a film) and is meant to be a documentation of what the pandemic felt like to me.

On a strange night in December 2019, Devin Townsend brought his high wire act to The Roundhouse, a converted railway shed in Camden, North London. It was the penultimate show of the tour in support of his latest album, the breath-takingly intricate and ambitious Empath, which itself found the man who made it consciously throwing off the artistic shackles he’d spent the past two decades wrapping around himself. This was Devin Townsend without a safety net, as captured on Order of Magnitude – Empath Live Volume 1. The incredible line-up included guitarists Mike Kenneally (ex-Frank Zappa) and Markus Reuter (Stick Men,The Crimson Projekct), drummer Morgen Agren (Kaipa, Mats and Morgan, Frank Zappa), bassist Nathan Navarro, Haken keyboard player Diego Tejeida, and guitarist/vocalist Ché Aimee Dorval, as well as vocalists Samantha and Anne Preis and Arabella Packford. Order of Magnitude is his crowning glory. After a lifetime of caring – sometimes too much – this is Devin Townsend free and unchained, rising to yet another challenge that he had set.

Canadian heavy music artist Devin Townsend will release EMPATH on the 29th March 2019, a record that will once and for all define himself as a musical force outside of any particular genre classification. On this album Devin has decided to see what would happen if all the styles that make up his current interests were finally represented in one place. Originally streamed on September 5th, 2020 on StageIt.com as a replacement show for the COVID affected “Empath Vol 2 European Tour” and various cancelled Summer festivals. The show features Devin on vocals and guitars, Samus Paulicelli III on drums, Wes Hauch on guitars and Diego Tejeida on keys.

Devin Townsend brings to you the Devolution Series: a grouping of oddities and interesting material that he would like people to hear, but that aren’t necessarily a ‘major release’. The series will include all the quarantine songs and concerts, as well as various live shows from the past few years. The first release, “Devolution Series #1 – Acoustically Inclined, Live in Leeds”, is a remixed and remastered version of the ‘Live in Leeds’ show that was originally included on the Empath Ultimate Edition as video asset. A cool acoustic show that deserves to be heard, now availble as audio version.
