Instrumental progressive rock album “Levin Torn White” is the kind of complex, intelligent, and experimental album that makes journeys into the genre rewarding and surprising. “Levin Torn White” is composed of Tony Levin on bass guitar and chapman stick, David Torn on guitar, and Alan White playing drums. On opening track “No Warning Lights”, the calm, unfamiliar background noise gives way to a frantic drum and bass assault that sounds like the Space Mountain ride hurtling to hell. Tracks such as “Ultra Mullett” have an electronic, futuristic pulse that recalls the type of aggressive ambient work Brian Eno created on albums including “Spinner” with Jah Wobble and last year’s “Small Craft on a Milk Sea” with Jon Hopkins. “Convergence” and other tracks have a more meditative and moody atmosphere. Most of the 14 songs on “Levin Torn White” have sudden shifts in tempo and rhythm. Songs like “Prom Night of the Centipede” hurl forward only to abruptly slow down and speed up again. The sudden changes in speed and how carefully they are handled are a testament to the dexterity and skill of these three expert musicians. “Levin Torn White” is a rich, textured instrumental album, and a fine addition to any prog rock fan’s music collection.

It remains an apt description for the outfit’s method of creating hypnotic pieces by gradually building intricate patterns of picked notes, plucked harmonics, mesmeric bass, and insistent rhythms. The music created by Stephan Thelen (tritone guitar), Bernard Wagner (tritone guitar), Christian Kuntner (tritone bass), Manuel Pasquinelli (drums, percussion) harnesses elements of rock, jazz and contemporary classical minimalism and fuses them to create a distinctive musical language.

David Torn – ever-intrepid guitarist, producer, improviser, film composer and soundscape artist – returns with only sky, an album that explores the far sonic edges of what one man and a guitar can create, a solo recording of almost orchestral atmosphere. It is Torn’s first ECM release since 2007’s acclaimed prezens, a full-band project, with Tim Berne, et al., that Jazzwise described as “a vibrating collage full of shimmering sonic shapes, a dark, urban electronic soundscape – a potent mix of jazz, free-form rock and technology that is both demanding and rewarding. ”Many of those same descriptors apply to only sky, with its hovering ambient shadows and vaulting flashes of light, its channeling of deep country/blues memories and Burroughsian dreams of North Africa. Recorded in the acoustically apt hall of the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in upstate New York (and then sorted and mixed in Torn’s own mad-scientist lair), only sky is an album to get lost in, over and again.
