Sometimes artists suddenly emerge from the past and achieve a significance that no one ever expected. David Axelrod is one such artist. His classic productions for Lou Rawls, Cannonball Adderley, his arrangements for the Electric Prunes and his own solo albums created a style of huge swaths of drums, dragging bass lines and spooky strings. Until recently, that didn’t really mean anything. Then the sample-obsessed hip-hop community discovered him and championed him, and his records went from landing on bargain shelves to fetching handsome sums. People like the Beatnuts and De La Soul found his records irresistible, and DJ Shadow liked him so much that he had him work on remixes for the UNKLE project on Mo’ Wax.

The first “non-concept” album from this studio master, featuring some lush, over-the-top covers (Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing,” Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain”) and about a couple dozen guest musicians, including Julian “Cannonball Adderley (alto sax), George Duke (ARP synth) and Gene Ammons (tenor sax).
