Ryo Kawasaki chose a career as a jazz fusion guitarist after spending some years studying as a scientist. During the 60s he played with various Japanese jazz groups and also formed his own bands. In the early 70s he came to New York where he settled and found steady work in very distinguished company, including the bands of Gil Evans, Elvin Jones, Chico Hamilton, Ted Curson and Joanne Brackeen. In the mid-80s, Kawasaki drifted out of performing music in favour of writing music software programmes for computers. He also produced several techno dance singles, forming his own company, Satellites Records, for their release.

As a teenager, when he first caught sight (and sound) of John Coltrane playing at New York’s famous Birdland Club, David Liebman fell instantly in love with jazz. A virtuoso on the soprano sax, and an innovative composer, Lieb’s attachment to jazz has always been something more than musical. The spirit behind the music and the community of musicians and listeners all figure into his life in jazz.

Saxophonist John Coltrane was among the most important and most controversial figures in jazz, recognized as one of the great jazz artists of our time. Recorded June 22, 2007 by the virtuoso saxophonists Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano almost 40 years to the day after Coltrane’s death, this album brilliantly gives homage to the breadth of John Coltrane’s relatively short but momentous musical legacy, featuring pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart. Recorded a decade ago at the legendary Clinton Recording Studios in NYC for the BBC radio show “Something Else”, the newly revealed session celebrates the semi centennial of Coltrane’s passing on July 17, 1967 with a seven-tune repertoire that covers each significant creative stage of Coltrane’s recorded legacy.

To celebrate the Coltrane anniversary, Liebman and Lovano decided that for this particular session they would broaden their scope to include music from all of Coltrane’s musical periods, thus producing a wide-ranging exploration that showcases six distinctive phases of his legacy.

Dave Liebman, Enrico Intra, Marco Vaggi, Tony Arco – Liebman meets Intra, Live (2008) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

–Dario Gentili, Jazzitalia

The saxophone quartet has become a major vehicle for this one time maligned instrument in the realm of both classical and contemporary music. Saxophone practitioners have succeeded in placing the instrument into these musical pantheons, making the saxophone quartet the woodwind equivalent of the string quartet. Of course, the horn did find an historic fit in jazz music, so it was only a matter of time before the saxophone quartet emerged as a vehicle for improvisation.

In the philosophical tradition of Taoism, “Chi” is the word used to describe the animating force of the universe, the breath of life that permeates all existence. A natural phenomenon, when channeled it can provide a spark to ignite seemingly supernatural powers. In their first meeting as a trio, saxophone great and NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman and virtuoso percussionists Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake tap into that spiritual force to create Chi, a transcendent collaboration deeply possessed of fresh inspiration and deep roots, ancient traditions and modern invention.

The National Endowment of the Arts’ Jazz Master, Dave Liebman, was born in New York City on September 4th, 1946 during a period of change in jazz, one that has yet to be properly documented by even its most noted musicians, writers, filmmakers, and serious academics. It was a time when Afro-Cuban based dance music and its driving polyrhythms were taking the city, and eventually the country, by storm. At its epicenter was the Machito Afro-Cubans, a big band led by the amazing multi-instrumentalist (clarinet, alto sax, lead trumpet) Mario Bauzá and his brother-in- law Frank Grillo (Machito). Thus Afro-Cuban jazz, the first form of Latin jazz, was born and Afro-Cuban percussion would become part of mainstream jazz in America.

Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach have known each other for forty years. They don’t need to talk to understand one another, notes suffice. They get along harmoniously. Their bond dates back to the sixties when they played together in the group “Lookout Farm” led by Dave Liebman. It became stronger still when they set up “Quest”, an almost legendary formation composed of Ron McClure and Billy Hart, as well as Dave and Richie. The electricity between the two was such that they decided to record three duos together (“Double Edge”, “The duo live” & “Omerta”). Fascinated by the art of working together as a team – with each person contributing his part towards achieving a common goal – they decided to attempt the exercise of the duo with others: Dave with drummer Wolfgang Reisinger, percussionist Ravy Magnifique and the pianists Marc Copland and Phil Markovitz; Richie with trombone player Conrad Herwig and guitarist John Abercrombie. It goes without saying that both enjoy listening to the other which is the golden rule of playing in a duo. Their complicity is such that it does not require words; it is tacit which totally justifies the album’s name: “Unspoken”. In this album, Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach let go of all constraints to create a harmony that pleasures the ears. They give time to time and take turns playing their music, Richie on the piano and Dave on tenor and soprano saxophone or traditional wooden flute. Whatever repertoire they choose – be it a personal theme, a jazz standard or even a piece by Armenian classical music composer Aram Khatchatourian – their symbiosis is as plain as day. Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach’s “Unspoken” is a message of serenity and humanity.
