UNCHARTED TERRITORIES reunites Dave Holland with saxophonist Evan Parker, a longtime friend from their early days in London. They are joined by Craig Taborn, on piano and electronics, and Ches Smith on percussion. In addition to quartet improvisations, they also broke off into every possible subset of duo and trio configurations. The group also recorded two compositions by Smith and one by Holland.The resulting 23 tracks present a series of deep, multi-layered conversations between the musicians, some of whom were interacting for the first time.

This LP features pianist Chick Corea, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Barry Altschul during the brief period that, along with Anthony Braxton, they were members of the fine avant-garde quartet Circle. The music heard on this set is not quite as free as Circle’s but often very explorative. Four of the six songs are Corea originals which, in addition to Holland’s “Vedana” and Wayne Shorter’s “Nefertiti,” form a very viable set of adventurous jazz, recorded just a few months before Corea changed direction. – Scott Yanow

The Art of Conversation marks the first time bassist/composer Dave Holland and pianist/composer Kenny Barron have recorded their duo performances. These titans began touring together throughout Europe and the United States in 2012 and this album reflects two years of Holland and Barron finessing their empathy, chemistry and repertoire. Out of an expansive body of work that they’ve cultivated, The Art of Conversation offers 10 compositions of originals and standards that exemplify their individual and combined musical ingenuity.

Holland and Barron will continue touring as a duo throughout the rest of 2014 in Europe and the United States. With The Art of Conversation capturing only a small portion of their still expanding repertoire, this disc hopefully marks just the beginning of more artful conversations between the two.

If you’ve ever picked up a guitar and played those short strings between the end of the neck and the pegs and wondered if one could make viable music with that kind of sound, then look no further, for that is precisely the pinpoint aesthetic captured on this rare recording. These improvisations are miniscule and entomological, whispering with the nocturnal regularity of a cricket. Holland and Bailey shift from pops and plucks to more sustained tones at the drop of a hat, but always with an ear keenly tuned to the other player. The two take full advantage of extended techniques to create a wide palette of sounds. These are delicate pieces, but no less full of verve and character for their utter precision. Sometimes the music is incredibly expansive. Other times it seems to implode, by turns galactic and subterranean. Because both musicians are so skillful at what they do, one can truly appreciate the spontaneous dynamics of their playing, the ways in which they react and prompt each other into action. They are never afraid to take separate paths, for they always seem to rejoin, and in doing so they add seemingly endless variety as the energy flows and ebbs. It’s always fascinating to hear Dave Holland’s earlier work, and this meeting with Bailey is certainly an archival treat.

The Tunisian Anouar Brahem is one of the most subtle contemporary oud players. Evolving in the ECM sphere, his discographic adventures therefore unfold on international grounds where music coming from ancestral traditions crosses paths with the contemporary and jazz worlds. The virtuoso, who celebrates his sixtieth birthday with this album, wanted to indulge himself by renewing a dialogue opened two decades ago with the bass player Dave Holland. And the cherry on top: this jazz master came with a former colleague of his Miles Davis period, the drummer Jack DeJohnette. Brahem also wanted to confront his Arabic lute against a high-level pianist and Manfred Eicher, Mister ECM, introduced him to the talented British musician Django Bates. The four men obviously get along well, and it shows in every corner of these nine tracks. Jazz is at the center, but far from being conventional, bound to be blended by mixing the Eastern scholarly grammar and the famous maqams. But most of the time it’s music both pure and without a label much like the virtuosos without borders who play it.
