Matthias Goerne not only performs at the highest level as a baritone himself, but his piano accompaniments also rank among the Champions League of classical music. For his first album, which was dedicated to Beethoven songs, he brought Jan Lisiecki on board. This was followed by the album Abendrot with melodies by Wagner and Strauss, among others, together with the young talent Seong-Jin Cho. Now we may experience the baritone in duo with the world-class Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov, presenting us with a metaphysical program of Berg, Schumann, Wolf, Shostakovich and Brahms.

For over 120 years, New York’s Carnegie Hall has been the site for magic moments, with a special status reserved for notable debuts, from Tchaikovsky to the Beatles. When young Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov made his main-stage Carnegie Hall recital debut before a packed house in February 2013, there was indeed a sense of electric anticipation. Winner of the 2011 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv the same year, Trifonov had already created a stir among connoisseurs; on the occasion of his first Carnegie recital, that anticipation gave way to the thrill, fulfillment, and delight of a full-fledged triumph.

Here, Daniil Trifonov brings us an exciting itinerary that mixes solo piano and concert performances with a challenging programme. Now fully mature, Trifinov intends to demonstrate how the Russian composers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries were truly modern. The period is known in Russia as the “Silver Age” and corresponds with modernism’s “fin de siècle”. The Silver Age covers the whole range of fine arts, as well as haute couture, design and – of course – music and ballet.

Daniil Trifonov pays homage to music created during a pivotal period in Russian history.

Daniil Trifonov’s new album, Silver Age , recorded with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra, recalls a time when Russia’s composers, poets, artists, dramatists and star performers were among the most original anywhere in the world. It illustrates the artistic audacity and brilliance of a turbulent era in the country’s history with works by three of its most pioneering composers: Scriabin’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in F sharp minor Op.20, Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor Op.16 and Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka . The tracklist also comprises Stravinsky’s Serenade and excerpts from the composer’s piano suite version of The Firebird , together with Prokofiev’s Sarcasmes Op.17, Piano Sonata No.8 in B flat major Op.84 and the “Gavotte” from Cinderella Op.95 No.2

Daniil Trifonov – Rachmaninov Variations (2015) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

While Sergey Rachmaninov is justly celebrated for his piano concertos and symphonies, his sets of variations shouldn’t be overlooked, for they are among his most inventive and satisfying works. Russian pianist Danil Trifonov plays the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, the Variations on a Theme of Chopin, and the Variations on a Theme of Corelli on this 2015 Deutsche Grammophon release, and he offers his own special tribute to the composer in his solo piano suite, Rachmaniana. For the Rhapsody, Trifonov is joined by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra, an ensemble that counts historic performances with Rachmaninov as part of its heritage, and plays with its characteristic lush sound and passionate expression. Trifonov is brilliant and precise in the Rhapsody, collaborating fully with the orchestra and sharing the spotlight as much as possible in such a showpiece. Yet in the solo variations, he is able to stretch out and demonstrate his gift for deeply expressive playing, as well as a talent for fantasy in his own composition. The reproduction throughout this CD is transparent and finely detailed, though the Rhapsody offers the most vibrant and spacious sound. –AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson

Transcendental is the new solo release by Piano Sensation Daniil Trifonov. His press reviews are consistently out of this world and The Times quote says it all: He is the finest young pianist of our age. After his successful “Rachmaninov Variations” last year, he has now created another statement to define his extraordinary and growing legacy. It is dedicated to the greatest pianist of his own century: Franz Liszt. The repertoire is Liszt’s Complete Concert Etudes. These Etudes remain amongst the most challenging piano pieces ever composed – and are rarely recorded or performed. This is the first time that the Complete Liszt Etudes have been recorded as a whole for DG. And Daniil Trifonov is one of the few pianists to have recorded them all in one go – in an unbelievable five days. Beyond his phenomenal technique, Daniil Trifonov is a distinctly Russian artist: an intense, soulful musician in the great Russian tradition whose presentation and repertoire set him apart from all other young piano stars of today.

Grammy winner Daniil Trifonov presents a cycle of Sergei Rachmaninov’s highly virtuosic Piano Concertos.

Recorded with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra, the orchestra most closely associated with the composer with which Rachmaninov himself famously recorded the set of concerti over 80 years ago.
The two-part “Journey with Rachmaninov” begins with DESTINATION RACHMANINOV – DEPARTURE, including the great Piano Concerto No. 2, probably Rachmaninov’s best-loved work, paired with the equally beautiful and rarely performed 4th Concerto. These voluminous works are contrasted with a taste of Rachmaninov the master miniaturist, with solo piano transcriptions of Bach’s Partita in E Major.

First you think : “here we go… yet agaaaaain another recording of Chopin’s two concertos”, then you read ‘world premiere’ in the description. Surprising, isn’t it? And yet, this is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth! This world premiere is describing the brand new orchestrations realised by Mikhail Pletnev. These re-orchestrations give prominence to the much more chamber-like aspect of the accompaniment, which admittedly is a little pale and formulaic in the version that we’ve known for almost two centuries. Pletnev has moderated the music score, thinning out some parts while not changing a single note: the piano part remains the same, and in the orchestra nothing changes apart from the instrumental assignation. In addition to those two concertos that are much more colorful, the pianist Daniil Trifonov offers us a handful of tributes to Chopin by his peers and successors: Schumann, whose admiration for the Polish composer wasn’t reciprocated, Grieg, Barber and Tchaikovsky, and most of all Mompou’s splendid series of Variations on a Theme of Chopin. New from old, but always for the best we won’t hasten to add.

As a follow up to Daniil Trifonov’s newest release BACH: The Art of Life, this Encore Edition includes a brand new variation by Daniil Trifonov – applying all the formal rigors of Bach’s design in the form of a Canon – giving the original motivic and harmonic invention a uniquely 21st Century sound.

BACH: The Art of Life is dedicated to J.S. Bach. Trifonov explores the scientific, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of Bach’s cosmos, his faith, family, and world. Centered around Bach’s mystical masterpiece, The Art of the Fugue, Trifonov’s project investigates the man behind the myth – a genius of humility and humor, whose loves, losses, and devotion inspired what Trifonov calls “some of humanity’s most emotionally rich and fascinatingly sophisticated expressions in music.”
