Compared with the catalogues of, say, Schubert, Loewe, or Schumann, the song output of Franz Liszt seems quite modest in terms of sheer quantity. Unexpected obstacles make it difficult, however, to obtain an overview of all the Lieder the Weimar virtuoso ever wrote. Not all of Liszt’s songs are published as sheet music, and this has always been the case; the only currently available collection is a meager anthology of ca. 40 Lieder. One is soon obliged to resort to out-of-print material. The old, 3-volume Leipzig collection edited by C. F. Kahnt contains 57 songs, whereas the most complete edition is the one from 1919-1920 by Carl Alexander, Archduke of Weimar, which is hard to come by. In the meantime, Internet platforms such as Petrucci (imslp.org) have become well-stocked archives where one can find older sheet music that would otherwise be unavailable.

ME and the middle and later ones. A result of the the Pandemic and challenging the re discovery of Beethoven’s sonatas Vol. III.

„In each volume of my complete recording of the piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven, I have clearly chosen the order of pieces with autobiographical criteria in mind. Over the past 15 years, my work as a pianist has increasingly migrated toward music-making in partnership with others. Although I started out mainly as a chamber musician collaborating with instrumentalists and singers, the focus has increasingly shifted toward duo recitals, primarily vocal recitals on a worldwide scale – but I never could have dreamed that such appearances would become so frequent that they would allow me to earn a stable living.

Whenever I was asked what became of my solo playing, I had to answer with a shrug, explaining that I needed a sort of sabbatical to let me practice solo repertoire undisturbed before I started giving solo piano recitals again. Then, covid struck. All of a sudden, I had time on my hands.

Baritone Konstantin Krimmel, voted ‘Best Newcomer’ of the year at the 2023 Oper! Awards in Germany and a member of the eminent Bavarian State Opera company since 2021, presents his third recording for Alpha Classics. In close partnership with pianist Daniel Heide, he places his artistry and his feeling for words at the service of the lied repertory. This is also an opportunity to discover his vision of the work, an unexpectedly contemporary, socio-psychological analysis: ‘ Die schöne Müllerin is a work that romanticises the development of a mental illness, and shows, unfiltered, how a young person can feel without a tempered emotional world. With all its dark sides.’

The first group of songs on texts by Ludwig Rellstab starts out in a relatively carefree, rapturous tone: a mood of spring is in the air. In Frühlingssehnsucht, “swelling desire” is colorfully illustrated by images of nature such as the silvery gurgling brook – an evocation of splendid vitality. But clouds soon darken the horizon: the brook becomes a raging torrent of negative emotions. Euphoria gives way to disappointment. The rapturous attitude is curbed: we hear of farewell, with a clear touch of bitterness. In the next group of settings of texts by Heinrich Heine, the story returns to its onset: now less rapturous, somewhat more aloof, and with even more bitterness at the end.

Even more than in Beethoven’s case, Mendelssohn’s Lieder were intended for performance in the salons of the prosperous bourgeoisie: a convivial circle of highly qualified connoisseurs who shared the same outlook, and often a similar financial status. Those members of the upper middle classes were the musical link and the sociological crossroads between Hausmusik and the concert hall. Mendelssohn often wrote songs as gifts for the friends he was visiting, frequently as settings of their own texts: the considerable technical challenges they contained still needed to be manageable for members of those circles.

When I first heard Beethoven’s Sonata No. 15 in D Major, op. 28, the “Pastoral”, it immediately conquered my heart. The swaying, deeply resounding, velvety bass notes and the tender theme in the right hand continue to produce a melodious sense of well-being in me to this day. A series of slow, melodious arches alternating with incisive, characteristic insertions create the general mood in the first movement.

„This complete recording of Franz Liszt’s Petrarch Sonnets attempts to highlight the significance of his different versions of the three Sonnets 47, 109, und 123 – possibly for the first time. Musicologists are baffled by the fact that Liszt wrote several versions of the same works. He even set the same texts to different music: not twice, but occasionally three or more times – an absolute exception in the history of music. This is both bewildering and rewarding: Liszt aficionados can embark on a treasure hunt through the scores.

Their purpose for their début album is to present the entire scope of their repertoire. André Schuen has been exploring different facets of his voice. “The three personalities we encounter on this recording represent three different generations. In Robert Schumann we meet the enraptured youthful lover.

In Frank Martin we meet a man caught in the midst of life but pushed to the brink of despair by fear of death.

And Hugo Wolf draws our gaze to Mignon’s father, the old harpist, full of melancholy, approaching the end of his life.”

Daniel Heide adds: “We’re also confronted with three different compositional styles.” In Robert Schumann’s music we have the soft, lyrical high notes that André Schuen finds so appealing. This – Heide adds – is core Romantic lied repertoire, loved by many and almost too familiar.
