Tenor Daniel Behle and two of his favourite composers: Strauss & Wagner. Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss are the two great musical fixed stars in the musical world of tenor Daniel Behle. At the 2021 Bayreuth Festival he was heard as David in the “Meistersinger”, in Dortmund and soon in Amsterdam he will be heard in the title role of “Lohengrin”.

For a long time it had been a wish of Daniel Behle’s heart to sing works by these two “Richards” with a large orchestra and to record them. Now this wish has come true.

Together with the Borusan Istanbul Symphony Orchestra under the conductor Thomas Rösner, Daniel Behle sings selected orchestral songs by Richard Strauss as well as scenes from “Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg”, “Lohengrin” and “Tannhauser” by Richard Wagner.

Celebrating the 300th anniversary of Gluck’s birth, Daniel Behle presents this album of Gluck’s lesser known opera arias. Showcasing their rich variety of styles, he illustrates that these works are primed for revival.
In the world of opera the artistic achievement of singers and their fellow musicians can create a special, incendiary chemistry with an audience. There is nothing like that magical moment of silence at the end of a marvellous aria before the first cries of „Bravo!“ ring out.

For his Gluck recital the German tenor Daniel Behle has chosen glorious arias by a master of the 18th century – Christoph Willibald Gluck – that are sure to elicit a rapturous response, especially when performed by one of the finest lyric tenors of our time.

Behle has been compared to such tenor legends as Fritz Wunderlich, Richard Tauber and Anton Dermota, praised for his “bright, supple and warm timbre” and his natural musicality (Fono Forum, August 2012). The beauty of his tone is complemented by the probing nature of his interpretations as he captures the emotions of each character with captivating psychological insight, playing in a masterly fashion with the colours of the music. Familiar arias are transformed into a new and moving experience.

Daniel Behle is accompanied by one of Europe’s leading Baroque orchestras, Armonia Atenea, conducted by the extraordinary George Petrou.

Of all the great composers, Schubert left by far the largest number of uncompleted works: symphonies, piano and chamber music, songs, choral music and operas. Six of the latter are represented on this disc—the early ‘Adrast’ written around the age of twenty and ‘Fierebras’ written in 1823, five years before the sudden end of his short life. Schubert made many attempts to achieve success on the Viennese operatic stage but was singularly unlucky in doing so. Consequently none of his operatic music ever entered the repertoire and today it remains the most unknown aspect of his work. Therefore this disc is an assembly of some very rare music indeed, most of which has never before been recorded. Indeed, most of these operas and singspiels have never been professionally staged since they were written. For this recording, German tenor Daniel Behle travelled to Linz/Austria and worked together with the L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Michi Gaigg. German tenor and composer Daniel Behle is without question one of the leading lyric German tenors of the moment. He made his Royal Opera debut in the 2016/17 Season as Ferrando (Così fan tutte) and was highly-celebrated. Behle is possibly best-known for his adaption of Schubert’s Winterreise for tenor and piano trio, performed in 2015 at the Wigmore Hall and recorded for Sony Classical with Behle and the Oliver Schnyder Trio.

The singer and composer Daniel Behle was honored with the prestigious OPUS Klassik as “Singer of the Year” in 2020. He is equally successful in concert, lied and opera. His repertoire ranges from baroque masterpieces, classical and romantic repertoire to 20th and 21st century compositions. His discography includes several award-winning recordings. His Lied recordings, including “Die Schöne Müllerin” and his two albums of Strauss songs, the most recent of which was awarded the German Record Critics’ Prize, have attracted particular attention. On his latest recording, Behle now presents a selection of Beethoven songs, accompanied by Jan Schultsz on fortepiano. Unlike Schubert or Schumann, Beethoven is not immediately associated with the Lied; one associates him more with the representative of the grand gesture. Nevertheless, this does not prevent him from leaving almost one hundred songs to posterity. “An die ferne Geliebte” (1851/1816) is undoubtedly one of the most famous of these works.
