With volume 4 of the complete Mozart Concertos, Cyprien Katsaris, Mari Ota and Eung-Gu Kim and the Salzburger Kammerphilharmonie under the baton of the Korean conductor Yoon K. Lee address the Concertos for two and three pianos, K. 365 and K. 242. These pieces, written in Mozart’s home city, bear witness to the relationships Mozart enjoyed with his pupils in the Salzburg aristocracy. Composed for Josepha Barbara von Auernhammer, the Concerto for two pianos, K. 365 is characterised by its virtuoso interplay between the pianists; the use of the two instruments afforded the composer an opportunity to establish a continuous dialogue. The Concerto for three pianos, K. 242 was dedicated to Countess Antonia Lodron and her two daughters Aloysia and Josepha. This elegant, very distinctive piece reveals Mozart’s concern to avoid upsetting his public or his patrons by too great a show of passion… It is of no little interest to hear the two-piano version of the same Concerto as revised by the composer to play with his sister Nannerl.

“Exceedingly satisfied with our musical collaboration on our Brahms/Schumann recording, I suggested to Helene Mercier that we take on the complete cycles of Brahms’s 21 Hungarian Dances and 16 Waltzes, Op.39, which, unlike me, she had already played in concert.
It was extremely important to both of us that the gypsy spirit was to the fore in the Hungarian Dances, likewise Viennese elegance in the Waltzes. I must humbly acknowledge how impressed I was by my Quebecoise partner’s level of understanding of this very distinctive music. This album consists of world premiere recordings by Cyprien Katsaris and Mikis Theodorakis.
Katsaris’s contributions are the Grande Fantaisie sur Zorba, inspired by the soundtrack of the movie Zorba the Greek, and Improvisation spontanee sur des chansons de Theodorakis. Theodorakis provides the Petite Pieces pour Piano and 11 Preludes, Nos. 5 & 7. Both composers also perform their own pieces on the album.

En 1994, dans le cadre de son contrat Sony, Cyprien Katsaris se rendait à Hamburg, dans la belle acoustique de la Friedrich-Ebert Halle, pour enregistrer plusieurs œuvres de J. S. Bach où se dévoile l’empreinte, forte, de la musique italienne de la fin du XVIIe et du début du XVIIIe, et ses violons concertants flamboyants et virtuoses. Sony avait publié une partie des œuvres enregistrées, en 1995, au sein du récital « Italy in Bach ». En regroupant aujourd’hui ces gravures Sony restantes, inédites, avec une autre partie de session également non publiée à ce jour, réalisée en 2000 au studio Van Geest – et complétant ainsi le « Bach Recital » paru sur Piano 21 en 2009 (P007) – Cyprien Katsaris nous offre un ensemble d’oeuvres de l’auteur des Concertos brandebourgeois, des plus réjouissants.

In 1994 under his contract with Sony, Cyprien Katsaris travelled to Hamburg to partake of the beautiful acoustics of the Friedrich-Ebert Halle for the recording of a number of J. S. Bach’s works wherein we find the distinctive stamp of Italian music of the late XVIIth and early XVIIIth Centuries and the concert sound of flamboyant, virtuoso violins. Sony published some of these recordings in 1995 as part of the recital “Italy in Bach”. In bringing together the unpublished Sony recordings from those sessions and those from another, also hitherto unpublished session dating from 2000 in the Van Geest Studio, thus rounding out the “Bach Recital” issued by Piano 21 in 2009 (P007), Cyprien Katsaris presents us with a most delectable selection of works by the composer of the Brandenburg Concertos.
