Crowded House is a long-standing and much-loved vehicle for the songwriting talents of Neil Finn. Formed in Melbourne Australia in 1985 out the ashes of New Zealand’s Split Enz by Neil, Paul Hester and Nick Seymour, their eponymous self-titled debut album on Capitol Records went on to global success with the hits ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ and ‘Something So Strong’. The band’s first incarnation lasted from 1985 through 1995 with four studio albums and worldwide success, becoming particularly beloved for their freewheeling and interactive live shows. In 2005 following the tragic death of Paul Hester, Neil and Nick felt emotionally compelled to bring Crowded House back, to put some more good history, as they described it, into the story of the band. Drafting in new drummer Matt Sherrod and with long-time touring member Mark Hart they released the album ‘Time On Earth’ to critical acclaim and toured the world. Another album, ‘Intriguer’, was recorded in 2009 and the band was inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame in 2016. With in excess of 12 million albums sold across six studio albums, two acclaimed ‘Best of’ collections, over 1.2 billion streams to date and following Neil Finn’s surprise star turn and an extremely successful world tour with Fleetwood Mac, Neil and Nick Seymour are inspired to begin a new chapter in the Crowded House story. Recorded in Valentine and United Studios in LA and then remotely across the first half of 2020, Crowded House’s seventh studio album is titled ‘Dreamers Are Waiting’.

Ranked #71 in Rolling Stone’s ‘100 Greatest Albums Of The 80s’ survey

‘Crowded House’ is the debut self-titled album by Crowded House, released in June 1986. There were 5 singles from the album and one of them, Don’t Dream It’s Over is the band’s signature song and was their first international hit, reaching #1 in Canada and #2 in the US.

When this sparkling debut by the three-piece Crowded House made its appearance in 1987, those starved for hooks minus the usual sentimentality were finally sated. New Zealander Neil Finn came all the way to Los Angeles from Australia, bringing with him some of the finest melodies and knowing lyrics to come down the pop-music pike in years. With immaculate production and keyboard additions by Mitchell Froom, (who found his fame with this band), „Crowded House“ proved to be a stellar debut.

Neil Finn first made his mark as a member of his big brother Tim’s band, Split Enz. His contribution to that band gave Split Enz its first international hits (the most notable of which was ‘I Got You’). Finn continued this tradition of writing and performing harmony-rich gems when he formed Crowded House with Split Enz drummer Paul Hester and Melbourne bassist Nick Seymour. Featuring the beautiful yet ambiguous ‘Don’t Dream Its Over’ (covered by Paul Young at the Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert), ‘World Where You Live,’ and ‘Something So Strong,’ „Crowded House“ is the ideal introduction to the delights of Neil Finn and his exceptional band.

Split Enz needed to end, particularly since founding member Tim Finn found his little brother Neil’s growth spurt uncomfortable, but also because Neil was no longer writing tunes that made sense within the context of a band that ran the gamut from art rock to eccentric new wave. Neil was now writing songs that were undeniably totems of popcraft, but infused with the spirit and introspection of a singer/songwriter. This formula would later become quite popular with artists from Matthew Sweet to the legions of basement auteurs in the pop underground, but this sensibility was relatively unheard of in the mid-’80s — hence the birth of Crowded House. Neil retained Paul Hester from Enz, added Nick Seymour for the trio, and recorded one abandoned attempt at an album before joining with Mitchell Froom for the band’s eponymous debut. At the time, Froom’s clean production seemed refreshing, almost rootsy, compared to the synth pop dominating the mainstream and college scenes at the time, but in retrospect it seems a little overreaching and fussy, particularly in its addition of echo and layers of keyboards during particularly inappropriate moments. But Finn at his best overshadowed this fairly stilted production with his expert songcraft. As it happened, the record was blessed by good timing, and the majestic ballad “Don’t Dream It’s Over” became an international hit, while its follow-up, the breezy “Something So Strong,” also turned into a hit. Both revealed different sides of Finn’s talents, with the first being lyrical and the second being effervescent, but perhaps the truest testaments to his talents are “Mean to Me,” “World Where You Live,” and “Now We’re Getting Somewhere,” songs where the lyrics meld with the melody in a way that is distinctive, affecting, and personal. If the rest of the record doesn’t reach those heights, it’s still good, well-constructed pop, and these aforementioned highlights point the way to Temple of Low Men, where Crowded House (and particularly Finn) came into its own.
