Colosseum released five albums between 1969 and 1971. The world’s first ever Jazzrock group toured non-stop for nearly three years. The band finally broke-up after enjoying chart success in several countries. Twenty three years later, in 1994, Colosseum literally picked-up where they had left off, went back on the road again, played more than 60 dates Europe wide, and issued the “Lives Reunion Concerts 1994” album and video. During the tour, they began writing and demoing songs for a new album and the resultant “Bread & Circuses” was released in 1997. Further European touring activity took place as Colosseum re-awakened old fans and gained new support through the sheer quality of their songs and musical showmanship. In 2003, the band released a new studio album, “Tomorrow’s Blues” which stands as the final Colosseum recording to feature saxophonist, Dick Heckstall-Smith before he passed away.

2014 album from the veteran British outfit. To play a new Colosseum album is to step into the unknown. Anything could happen. All bets are off. While less questing bands are content to issue fading photocopies of their best-selling work, TIME ON OUR SIDE is the sound of old friends embarking on new adventures. Eleven years have passed since TOMORROW’S BLUES: A lifetime in rock ‘n’ roll. The album may have been a pleasure to record, at drummer Jon Hiseman’s own Temple Music Studio in Surrey, yet it’s completion marks the end of a period of some uncertainty. “We started it in 2010 by meeting in the studio and playing through demos that had been written by the band members,” the drummer remembers. “But after 2010, the future of Colosseum was always going to be decided by whether Barbara would be able to tour again.” of course, multi-instrumentalist Barbara Thompson is a vital part of the Colosseum story. The completion alone of TIME ON OUR SIDE, then, is a towering achievement. That this new album is so dazzlingly successful is testament to the enduring genius of one of Britain’s most inventive lineups. Almost a half-century after Colosseum’s formation, this is unmistakably the sound of a band with gas still in the tank and endless lightbulbs popping over their heads. “I know that when we get together we all feel like we are coming home,” says Hiseman. “This album was easy to make and it just feels right”.

On June 24th 1994, Colosseum played their first concert together for 23 years. Jon Hiseman said ‘Despite many requests from fans and promoters over the past couple of decades, I never seriously considered reforming the original Colosseum. But the release of all the albums on CD in the early ’90’s was extremely successful and generated a lot of new interest in the band. When Dave, Dick, Clem and Chris ganged up on me in 1993 it became clear there was no escape. A date was set and I found Mark in America and we all met up in my studio on June 17th 1994 and I gave the count in for ‘Those About to Die’. We played as if the band had never been apart’.

Once more, the extraordinary musicians of Colosseum have produced an equally extraordinary and first-class live album. During the summer tour of 2005 Miles Ashton, the great live sound engineer who runs his own studio in Watford, recorded all of Colosseum’s concerts to 24-track digital. Guitarist Clem Clempson and Keyboard player Dave Greenslade spent long days at Clem’s studio auditioning all the performances looking for that magical mix of performance and natural sound quality and put together a complete show to run over two CD’s. So now, you can enjoy a complete Colosseum concert with the fanstastic voice of Chris Farlowe, the virtuoso playing of Clem Clemspon, Dave Greenslade and Barbara Thompson plus the outstanding bass player Mark Clarke – and of course drumming legend Jon Hiseman.
