The Canadian über-entertainer has distinguished himself both in the intimate register with his delicate trilogy of albums SOLO PIANO and in the rowdy spectacle, distilling his showman energy through all the philharmonies of Europe. He has collaborated with internationally renowned artists such as Feist, Drake, Jarvis Cocker and Daft Punk, and the anthemic power of his song Smothered Mate (taken from IVORY TOWER) made it the soundtrack for the Blues’ victories.

Chilly Gonzales & Jarvis Cocker – Room 29 (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Standing at the west end of Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard, the Chateau Marmont hotel has seen many a famous and infamous guest pass through its doors since it opened in 1929. A 2012 stay in one of its second-floor rooms inspired British lyricist and singer Jarvis Cocker to look into its history and led to this collaborative project with multi-faceted Canadian pianist and composer Chilly Gonzales. Room 29, a 21st-century song cycle, is set for release on Deutsche Grammophon/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company, on 17 March. Gonzales’ score and Cocker’s lyrics conjure up the lives of some of Room 29’s previous occupants, as well as shining a light on the glittering fantasy and often bleak reality of Hollywood.

In 2004, he said that his album Solo Piano was a project that had relieved him of a variety of complexes that he had had about the relationship of his music to his character. This time, Solo Piano III rounds off what he describes as a trilogy. “The musical purity of Solo Piano III is not an antidote for our times”, he says, “it is a reflection of all the beauty and ugliness around us. “
