Deluxe CD presentation with extensive booklet – remastered from the original tapes. 1985 was perhaps the best year of the last phase of Chet Baker’s career and his recordings with Philip Catherine and Jean-Louis Rassinfosse are clear proof of this. These, in general, are of great artistic standing and show that the trio, born almost extemporaneously, had turned into a real group, in which the musicians conversed with each other, but also had ample spaces to express themselves as soloists. A trio without piano and drums in which the lyricism of Baker’s trumpet, Catherine’s nervous guitar phrasing, as well as the solidity of Rassinfosse’s constant rhythmic drive, ensured the music a surprising balance based on contrasts.

Recorded September 14, 1985 during the 12th Foggia Jazz Festival.

This session was recorded on Monday, October 24, 1955, between 14 and 21 o’clock at the Pathe-Maggellan studio in Paris. On October 24, only Jimmy Bond was still with Chet: Peter Littman had returned to America and his place was now taken by Nils-Bertil ‘Bert’ Dahlander, a Swedish drummer who had accompanied Lars Gullin. On the keyboard was an almost unknown pianist named Gérard Gustin, whom Eddie Barclay had just signed. Due to these connections, the band were forced to resort to standards – Chet was able to play them better than anyone else. He chose eight tracks: “These Foolish Things”, which remained in the quartet’s repertoire for a while, and five others, which the trumpeter plays here for the first time: “There’s a Small Hotel”, “Autumn in New York”, “Summertime”, “You Go To My Head” and “Tenderly”, as well as another two – “I’ll Remember April” and “Lover Man” – which he performed less than ten days earlier with Lars Gullin and Dick Twardzik, whose disappearance Chet still did not want to accept. Under these circumstances, the whole session exudes a certain sadness that cannot be hidden, no matter in what key or at what tempo.

At the age of ten, Baker received a trombone from his father, who was a guitarist. Chet soon switched to the trumpet and quickly learned to play swing tunes and improvise as a self-taught musician. His special ability was to grasp harmonic relationships melodically. Baker composed very little.

At first he played in the school orchestra, then at public dances. In 1946 he enlisted in the military and joined the 298th Army Band in Berlin. In 1948 he was mustered out. He studied theory and harmony at El Camino College in Los Angeles, playing in clubs at night. In 1950 he rejoined the Army and became a member of the 6th Army Band at Presidio in San Francisco. Then he asked for his discharge and decided to become a professional jazz musician.

In spring 1952 he became a trumpet player in Charlie Parker’s band. Baker became famous as a trumpet player in Gerry Mulligan’s piano-less quartet that played at The Haig in Los Angeles. The single My Funny Valentine, released in 1952 on Fantasy Records, became a hit and it was henceforth a kind of signature for Baker, which he played again and again in countless variations until the end of his life. Baker is often referred to as a representative of this style, partly because of his association with Mulligan, who, along with Lennie Tristano, is considered a leading figure in cool jazz. His recordings demonstrate his great versatility in many styles of jazz.

…A Precious Document this of Bruce Weber, that reveals The soul of this Extraordinary and Inimitable Artist, to a few months after his absurd death occurred in May of 1988, a very special Soul , which make in contrasts his incomparable talent and a great inner fragility equally unique, extremely and deep-rooted .
…For those who do not know him, Chet Baker was (and still is) one of the most Great, the Greatest Jazz trumpet player in the World, and one of the main members of the so-called Cool Jazz, in the golden years (50/60 ) was by far the best and with his performances she could outshine even as sacred Monster like Miles Davis – Louis Armstrong – Dizzy Gillespie, etc… , and has worked and knew precisely the Greatest, as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie etc … and Charlie Parker that choosing to play in his band, he later said to his colleagues, “beware of this white boy, he has a great talent and he will hear very often from now on …”.
…In addition to the trumpet, very soon also became vocalist/singer, with a very soft voice , romantic, melancholic at times (of course depending on the characteristic of his performance), especially in the last years of his life, always in the golden years, with His extraordinary voice, even managed to equalize the incomparable Nat King Cole.
…A big great talent we said, so much so that in 11 years when he was given the first Trumpet (from his father, a former Musician Guitarist) after a while he was already able to replicate perfectly the Greatest Classics of the Great Composers, had music in their blood, many of his friends and colleagues argued often with more than a hint of envy, while that for them to succeed in their art necessarily had to practice constantly, for him instead not, for Chet Backer was all very easy, instinctive, genuine, and everything came from the depths of his heart, his soul, his infinite Passion .
…Like all the Greatest, he soon “surrendered” and fell into the tunnel of heroin addiction, which has led many legal problems as well as physical (as a result of “aggression” never clearly elucidated, are extracted to him all his teeth and he had to learn to play again with dentures, a very difficult thing), even and especially here with us in Italy where he resided for a long time and worked with our Greatest Artists of the Age, as well as in many Italian Films .
…Besides it had ( had, up to the end of his days, despite everything) so many Beautiful Women, since himself was very beautiful, in more besides the beauty, it possessed a bewitching magnetic character, united to an extreme gentleness in the ways to do and to speak, and this happened also live in his performances .
…And in fact, it was his Photography on one of his LPs to attract the attention of Director Weber (at the time he was just a child), until they met again in 1986 and Bruce Weber offered him to shoot this documentary that traces to broadly throughout his Magnificent and Amazing career , so its Superb Music, as well as his character, his life, his friends, his colleagues, the great characters (of the Music, but not only) known to him, its loves, his family, his children, in short, an extremely Document Deep and Detailed, to the Entire Existence of Chet Backer .
…The last 10/15 minutes in particular of this splendid documentary, are truly Unique and are Touching Beauty , then if you get the chance to see it, you’ll understand why .

Gerald Joseph Mulligan (April 6, 1927 – January 20, 1996), also known as Jeru, was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger. Though primarily known as one of the leading jazz baritone saxophonists—playing the instrument with a light and airy tone in the era of cool jazz—Mulligan was also a significant arranger, working with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and others. His pianoless quartet of the early 1950s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the best cool jazz groups. Mulligan was also a skilled pianist and played several other reed instruments. Several of his compositions, such as “Walkin’ Shoes” and “Five Brothers”, have become standards…
