The Chopin Project is Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas’ most ambitious project to date, comprising a trio of albums that pay tribute to Chopin’s favorite instrument.

The first chapter, “Cello Arrangements”, presents a unique and enchanting collection of Chopin’s most famous works, arranged for cello by great musicians of all times, from Franchomme, Glazounov, Misha Maisky to Thomas himself.

The second chapter, “Complete Chamber Music”, offers the complete collection of Chopin’s works for chamber ensemble, featuring Thomas and a group of world-class musicians such as Daniel Hope, Julien Brocal, Julien Libeer and Lucas Debargue.

Finally, in “The Franchomme Legacy”, the third chapter of the trilogy, Thomas explores the relationship between Chopin and his close friend and fellow cellist Auguste Franchomme. In this collection she shows the influence Franchomme had on Chopin’s music and the deep connection between these two great musicians.

Camille Thomas and Beatrice Berrut – Rachmaninoff, Kabalevsky & Auerbach: A Century of Russian Colours (2013) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

This recording is the result of the passion the young musicians Camille Thomas (cello) and Beatrice Berrut (piano) have always felt for Russian music. Whatever its period of composition, they find in this repertoire the profundity and complexity of the Slavic soul, taking to extremes the expression of human torments. Camille Thomas: ‘For this recording we immediately thought of playing Russian music. In A Century of Russian Colours, we start with a very Romantic composition, Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata op.19. The programme continues with a very rarely recorded work, bearing the marks of Soviet communism, showing fear and anguish, but also the rigour and conformism of Dmitry Kabalevsky. We end with a young composer who is very highly thought of in the musical world: Lera Auerbach, one of the last artists to be stripped of Russian nationality, who now lives in the United States and Germany.’

“Beauty will save the world,” wrote Dostoyevsky, which is the claim that Camille Thomas makes throughout this record. Not beauty for the sake of hedonism, but a beauty that believes there is a burning line to be drawn between pain and hope. Camille Thomas’ new album illustrates this, structured like an archipelago surrounding the Cello Concerto composed by Fazil Say. Camille Thomas gave its premiere in 2018, and her album spanning the work of ten composers, allows us to travel the path from pain to hope. On the threshold, we meet three pieces: the heart-rending melody of the Kaddisch by Ravel, a sublimation of the Jewish prayer for the dead; the lamentation from Purcell’s Dido, quasi a lullaby from the queen who awaits her death, in a nakedness without pathos; and between those two works, the tender Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Gluck’s Orfeo, in which we hear the first signals of hope. The album is available today for pre-order and is accompanied by the pre-release track of Gluck’s Dance of the Blessed Spirits from his opera Orfeo ed Euridice.

Camille Thomas – Saint-Saëns, Offenbach (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Alongside the famous First Cello Concerto from Saint-Saëns, which opens this album from Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas (recently decorated with an ECHO KLASSIK prize for Best Chamber Music Recording and a Choc de Classica, now recording exclusively for Deutsche Gramophon), we are offered a glimpse here of a few of Saint-Saëns’s rarities, alongside some even-rarer-rarities from Jacques Offenbach – himself a celebrated cellist. Saint-Saëns’s 1862 Suite for Cello and Orchestra takes in old courtly dances, given the treatment that only a composer as rooted in the 19th Century as Saint-Saëns could. There is also a re-writing of a famous air, “Mon cœur s’ouvre à ta voix” from Samson and Delilah, which the cellists quickly seized upon for its very instrumental melodic line. As for Offenbach, we have the Introduction, Prayer and Bolero of 1840, a time when the musician had yet to compose a single opera, a single operetta, and indeed hardly a single vocal line apart from a few melodies. Note that the three pieces assembled here in fact originate from the Spanish stage, along with two other similar pieces which wound up being cut by the editor. Camille Thomas completes his programme with a few adaptations taken from Hoffman’s Tales – the unmissable barcarole, performed here by violinist Nemanja Radulovic – and the Brazilian’s piece from La Vie Parisienne, with Rolando Villazón as a guest star, who gives a lusty performance in his super-charged Latin American accent. Hair-raising!
