The Science of Things is the third studio album by British band Bush, released on 26 October 1999, through Trauma Records. The last Bush album released through Trauma, it peaked at number eleven on the US Billboard 200 and has been certified platinum by the RIAA. It is the penultimate Bush studio album to feature Dave Parsons and Nigel Pulsford.

The Science of Things incorporated electronic elements into Bush’s hard rock sound; particularly on the album’s lead single “The Chemicals Between Us”. Broadly following a science fiction motif, the album’s lyrical themes ranged from the 1980 murder of Dorothy Stratten, the election of Tony Blair in the UK and environmental damage.

Sixteen Stone is the debut studio album by English rock band Bush, released on 6 December 1994 by Trauma and Interscope Records. It became the band’s most popular album, peaking at number four on the US Billboard 200 and boasting numerous successful singles. “Comedown” and “Glycerine” remain two of Bush’s biggest hits to date, each reaching number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. “Comedown”, “Machinehead”, and “Glycerine” were the three songs from the album to enter the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching number thirty, number forty-three, and number twenty-eight, respectively. The album was certified 6× Platinum in the United States by the RIAA on 16 April 1997. Although notably less successful in the band’s native Britain, the album was nonetheless certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry.

Featuring a rock sound characterised by guitar distortion and quiet interludes, the album quickly invited comparisons to Seattle grunge bands; particularly Nirvana.

To mark its twentieth anniversary, a remastered edition of the album was released on 14 October 2014.

Bush – “Razorblade Suitcase (In Addition)” – Twenty four years ago, BUSH bravely followed up their 1994 multi-platinum juggernaut of a debut, ‘Sixteen Stone’, with a darker, more cerebral sophomore effort in ‘Razorblade Suitcase’. Produced by Steve Albini and recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 293,000 copies during it’s first week of release in the US and staying alive with hit singles “Greedy Fly” and “Swallowed”. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this 3x platinum album, the band has announced a deluxe, remastered LP edition titled ‘Razorblade Suitcase (In Addition)’ via ROUND HILL/ZUMA ROCK RECORDS. In addition to the original remastered album, the reissue will also include four rare bonus tracks: “Old”, “Broken TV”, “Bubbles”, and “Sleeper” on a double ‘Black’ and ‘White’ AsideBside vinyl color. The metallic foil jacket features reinterpreted artwork by designer Shaun Durkan, and a fold out poster with never-before-printed lyrics and album liner notes from producer Steve Albini.

Deconstructed is a remix album by British band Bush, released on 11 November 1997, through Trauma Records. It did not feature any new material but was a collaborative effort between the band and various producers working in the electronic genre of music to remix some of the band’s previously released songs. “Mouth (The Stingray Mix)” was released as a single in 1997 and became a minor hit, due largely in part to it being featured prominently in both the trailer and the 1997 film An American Werewolf in Paris.

Three tracks from this album, “Mouth (The Stingray Mix)”, “Everything Zen (The Lhasa Fever Mix)”, and “Swallowed (The Goldie/Both Sides Toasted Please Mix)” also appear on Bush’s 2005 greatest hits compilation, The Best of ’94–’99.

In a 1997 interview with NY Rock, Gavin Rossdale noted the development of Deconstructed:

“It was an interesting idea, to try and mix two completely different genres, maybe influence the whole dance and techno scene with some good old fashioned rock. In a way, they are the old singles, but remixed they’ve got a completely different slant which is certainly interesting.’

Bush – The Art Of Survival (Deluxe) (2022) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Launching a late-era surprise attack with the towering The Art of Survival, Bush haven’t sounded so vital and hungry since their 1990s heyday. The polar opposite of 2017’s Black and White Rainbows, Survival builds upon 2020’s course-correcting The Kingdom and leaves it in the dust. Their best post-hiatus offering to date, the aggressive set finds frontman Gavin Rossdale and bandmates Chris Traynor, Corey Britz, and Nik Hughes firing on full throttle with what might end up being Bush’s heaviest album ever. That passion stems from the all-too-real inspiration behind much of the lyrical content. Staring down climate disaster, the corrosion of women’s rights, widespread intolerance, and impending societal collapse, Rossdale channels his frustration and anxiety with the state of the planet with a heavy dose of anger. The cacophonous single “More Than Machines” rails against government control of women’s bodies and the willful destruction of the planet, while the churning “Shark Bite” finds Rossdale lapsing into hopelessness with cries of “the earth is a madhouse, the planet so screwed.” Amongst the rage, he injects a few touches of optimism for good measure. On the lurching “Heavy Is the Ocean,” he declares, “We crack, but we don’t break,” as the band stomps through old-school sludge, later fighting for hope through the stoner-rock riffs and spacey production of “Human Sand.” Noticeably, Rossdale’s voice is starting to show signs of wear and tear, pushed to the limits on songs like “Kiss Me I’m Dead,” but those cracks in his usual polished delivery make The Art of Survival even more urgent and relatable. Every track here is a highlight, careening from near-metal moments such as “Identity” to the programmed beats of midtempo breathers like “Creatures of the Fire” — which could have been on The Science of Things — and “1000 Years,” an atmospheric slow burn that closes the album to gorgeous effect. Revitalized, Bush is reborn with The Art of Survival, an essential late-catalog installment that re-energizes their sound with fresh tricks and newfound purpose. – Neil Z. Yeung
