The most comprehensive Bruckner Symphonies cycle, including all available versions. Bruckner’s Third Symphony was always something of a symphonic problem child, from its disastrous first performance (not with standing the enthusiastic reception it received from a young Gustav Mahler) until well into the 20th century. In its original form, it’s the longest, most Wagnerian of his symphonies that is often considered, rightly or wrongly, the first truly Brucknerian symphony. While some cherish the uncompromising originality of the first version, Bruckner himself preferred the much tighter 1889 third version, finding it “incomparably better”. This recording of that final version now enables listeners to decide for themselves.

When Otto Desshoff read through the score of Bruckner’s Second Symphony to determine its suitability for performance by the Vienna Philharmonic, he declared “What nonsense this is”, dooming the work to a life of revisions. Composed in 1871, the work was then known as The Third, since the original second, Zeroeth, hadn’t yet been removed from the catalogue of Bruckner’s numbered symphonies. Although the premiere of The Second Symphony was quite well received, Bruckner and his team of assistants set about reworking it in 1877, trimming it of any superfluous material, most significantly in the Finale, where a full 193 bars were pruned. This recording of the 1877 version observes all those cuts, without affecting Bruckner’s original, expansive structure.

The third publication of the comprehensive complete recording of all Bruckner symphonies in 19 surviving versions

Although the work did not belong to the canon of his nine numbered symphonies, which the composer bequeathed to the court library, he did not destroy them. Perhaps it was the hope that future generations would see this symphony in what he believed to be the right light that prompted him to label it ‘invalid’, ‘completely void’ and ‘cancelled’ at various points. In this CD edition, the text has to be reread and understood. What is the reason for this and what does Bruckner’s music point to.

Many stereotypes and assumptions about Anton Bruckner’s personality and works require a critical review. The planned comprehensive complete recording of all Bruckner symphonies in 19 surviving versions #bruckner2024 aims to show why the Linz composer came from and what his music referred to – a reference without stereotypes and hasty conclusions, close to the musical text of the respective edition. Uncompromising in his life as he was in his music, Korean composer Isang Yun (1917–95) held fast to his dream of a united Korea, even as he was unjustly accused of espionage for North Korea and sentenced to imprisonment and death. From a life of unimaginable oppression and torture emerges music of raw emotional power, heard on Iang Yun – Sunrise Falling, a centennial commemoration of Yun’s life and music from the Pentatone Oxingale Series. Maestro Dennis Russell Davies, a longtime collaborator and advocate for Yun, curates the programme and conducts the Bruckner Orchestra Linz. A cellist himself, Yun’s fascinating, highly autobiographical Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra (1975/76) anchors the album. In a live performance, cellist Matt Haimovitz tackles the controlled chaos of Yun’s score, bursting with passion, despair, and new timbral textures, such as the use of a plectrum to emulate the Korean zither, the kŏmun’go. Yun’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra no.1 (1981) features violinist Yumi Hwang-Williams, who reflects upon her own emotional return to Korea in 2015, where she performed the work at a festival in honour of Yun. The double album also includes the orchestral Fanfare and Memorial, and additional illuminating solo works by Yun performed by pianist Maki Namekawa, Hwang-Williams, and Haimovitz. 100 years after Isang Yun’s birth, the two Koreas still teeter on a razor’s edge, with ever more global ramifications. His music opens the gate to a lost, united land, with Yun’s own heart bleeding but ever hopeful.
