If there’s any period in modern Springsteen history that continues to grow in admiration it is the 2007-2008 Magic era.

There was always something appealing in the idea that Bruce and the E Street Band weren’t reuniting after an extended separation (only a few years since Vote For Change) nor called to service by historic events, but simply touring behind an excellent new album. Better still, the Magic tour created the setlist model we’ve had ever since.

At 22 tracks, the final date in Philadelphia on Bruce Springsteen’s 1999 Reunion Tour with the E Street Band might appear short. After all, previous Archive Series selections from that year (Chicago and Los Angeles) featured 25 songs. But this show is stocked with lengthy ones, rarities, and a good deal of complexity. “Incident on 57th Street” and “New York City Serenade,” after all, take some time to unspool.

With the first Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concerts in six years now fewer than 50 days away, a return to where their rebirth began feels fitting. East Rutherford, NJ 7/18/99 was only the band’s second US date on the Reunion tour. It followed a 36-show European leg that saw them playing beloved outtakes (finally released on Tracks), exploring the depths of their own catalog, and rounding into form ahead of an audacious 15-night stand at Continental Airlines Arena to kick off the American run.

Decades from now, when historians and epidemiologists look back at the Covid era, they’ll probably have a hard time pinpointing the exact moment the pandemic came to an end in America and normal life resumed. Some will probably point to the day in August 2021 when the vaccination rate hit 70 percent, while others will spotlight April 2022, when airlines dropped their mask mandate, or even Joe Biden’s 60 Minutes interview a few months later when he bluntly declared the pandemic over despite protests from members of his own administration. Others still might say that moment is still to come.

From another perspective, though, there’s a strong case to be made that it happened on Feb. 1 at 8:01 p.m. EST, when Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band walked onstage at Tampa, Florida’s Amalie Arena and kicked off their world tour with a thunderous rendition of “No Surrender” in front of 20,000 screaming, maskless fans.

This moment followed six painfully long years of E Street Band inactivity — including multiple tour delays due to Covid concerns — and a torrent of outrage over Springsteen’s decision to dramatically raise ticket prices this time around. “I know it was unpopular with some fans,” Springsteen told Rolling Stone late last year, in his only remarks to date on the controversy. “But if there’s any complaints on the way out, you can have your money back.”

Playing what was originally scheduled to be their final show of the tour, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band drop one of the best of 1978 at The Fox. No full recording of Atlanta 10/1/78, audience or otherwise, has ever been available. Newly mixed from Plangent Processed, multitrack masters, 10/1/78 is a previously unheard Darkness tour masterwork, from the show-opening cover of the Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time” through the encore closer “Quarter To Three.” In between, we’re treated to “Heartbreak Hotel,” “It’s My Life,” “Meeting Across The River,” “For You,” “Because The Night,” “Point Blank,” “Kitty’s Back” and “Incident On 57th Street” across this go-out-with-a-bang, 24-song set.
