Blossom Dearie (April 28, 1924 – February 7, 2009) was an American jazz singer and pianist, particularly excelling in the bebop style. She is recognizable by her fresh and childlike voice as well as by a game with a refined harmonic sense, impeccable rhythmic spring, precise and delicate touch.

This is such a swinging, sweet and tasty Jazz album. Its titled: Blossom Dearie: The Pianist: Le Blue Stars (Jazz in Paris). With Blossom Dearie (piano), Herman Garst (bass), and Bernard Planchenault (drums). Performing: The Continental, The Boy Next Door, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Moonlight Saving time (There Ought To Be), The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, April In Paris, Blue Moon, and Down The Depths of The 90th Floor. In addition are four tunes by Le Blue Stars, a vocal octet (Blossom Dearie, Christiane Legrand, Jeanine deWaleyne, Nadine Young, Fats Sadi, Christian Chevalier, Roger Guerin& Jean Mercadier)singing: Le Legende du pays des oiseaux, Lettre a Virginie, Toute ma joie, and Embasse-moi bien, in French, of course. The album was recorded in Paris in 1955. And sounds as fresh and, come on let’s just tell it like it is: as COOL and as HIP – as if it were recorded this afternoon. This from the liner notes, simply because it cannot be better expressed: “I’ve said that Blossom Dearie possesses a rare talent: that of allying taste and simpicity, an unfailing harmonic sense, a light , soft touch, and finally swing.” – Raymond Fol. She was born, Margrethe Blossom Dearie in East Durham, near Albany in upstate New York in 1924, and with a name like hers it seems only natural that she should become a star; added to which Blossom was a one off.

She studied classical piano as a child, before switching to jazz as a teenager. She joined Woody Herman’s vocal group, The Blue Flames, having moved to New York shortly after the end of the Second World War; she later joined the Blue Reys, the singing group with Alvino Rey’s band.

Blossom Dearie’s second album for Verve, released in 1958, continued a streak of success that began with her first LP the year before. The jazz vocalist and pianist covers standards including the title song by Cole Porter, along with less familiar but no less impressive tunes. Dearie is backed on this session by the same stellar musicians as on her debut: guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jo Jones.

Margrethe Blossom Dearie (April 28, 1924 – February 7, 2009) was an American jazz singer and pianist. She had a recognizably light and girlish voice. Dearie performed regular engagements in London and New York City over many years and collaborated with many musicians, including Johnny Mercer, Miles Davis, Jack Segal, Johnny Mandel, Duncan Lamont, Bob Dorough, Dave Frishberg, and Jay Berliner.
