Billy Cobham is a living legend of the drums, revered for his ultra-dramatic, muscular and bar-raising work with fusion pioneers the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Since the ’60s Cobham has appeared on over 300 recordings, including those by pop and rock icons such as Peter Gabriel, Jack Bruce, Bob Weir and James Brown, and has released more than thirty-five albums as a leader.

Drummer Billy Cobham was fresh from his success with the Mahavishnu Orchestra when he recorded his debut album, which is still his best. Most of the selections showcase Cobham in a quartet with keyboardist Jan Hammer, guitarist Tommy Bolin, and electric bassist Lee Sklar. Two other numbers include Joe Farrell on flute and soprano and trumpeter Jimmy Owens with guitarist John Tropea, Hammer, bassist Ron Carter, and Ray Barretto on congas. The generally high-quality compositions (which include “Red Baron”) make this fusion set a standout, a strong mixture of rock-ish rhythms and jazz improvising.

At the dawn of the 1970s, Billy Cobham built his legend with his bandleader debut, Spectrum. Raw, daring and overflowing with adrenalin, the album topped the Billboard Jazz charts. Having played for Miles Davis, Horace Silver and Mose Allison, Billy Cobham had joined the legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1971, before signing to Atlantic as a solo artist in 1973. Worshipped today as a titan of drumming, Billy Cobham’s career is now in its fifth decade.

The set includes two rare outtakes, “All 4 One” from the 1973 Spectrum sessions, and “Neu Rock ‘n’ Roll” from the 1975 A Funky Thide Of Sings sessions.
