Billie Marten’s fourth album ‘Drop Cherries’, released April 2023. Recorded entirely on tape in Somerset and Wales in the previous summer, ‘Drop Cherries’ marks the very first time that Billie Marten has both written and co-produced (with Dom Monks) one of her records; following critically-lauded 2021 album ‘Flora Fauna’, ‘Feeding Seahorses by Hand’ (2019) and ‘Writing of Blues and Yellows’ (2016). The title is taken from a tale she heard from a friend just before she was starting to create songs for the album, and the title track came soon after. It’s a metaphor where the gift of cherries stands for offering someone your love; doing anything you can to make them happy. ‘Dropping cherries,’ she begins, ‘is such a strong, visceral image that I tried to channel throughout recording in Somerset and Wales, to capture the vibrancy, unpredictability, and occasional chaos one experiences within a relationship’.

Billie Marten once said her youth was “the worst thing” about her. Society’s obsession with age, especially in the context of art, can be something of a poisoned chalice. Early articles about the singer-songwriter focused her supposedly ‘precocious’ talent, and in a statement accompanying this album, she speaks about having previously concealed herself in her music and being “obsessed with what people thought of me”. Confidence and clarity has come with age – and with it her biggest, boldest music.

Bille Marten, one of Britain’s most promising young voices, releases her new album: Feeding Seahorses by Hand. It comes a few years after her debut Writing Of Blues and Yellows; a time which has seen her complete her secondary school studies, including GCSEs and A-Levels, on top of travelling and creating the new record. It’s no surprise that she has maturity beyond her years. Feeding Seahorses By Hand takes a magnifying glass to the outside world, giving a fictional appraisal of Donald Trump from the perspective of his daughter on the saccharine Cartoon People, and poking fun at unnamed politicians on Betsy.
