The acclaimed British pianist, Benjamin Grosvenor, still only 30 and yet a well-established favourite of critics and audiences around the globe, takes Robert Schumann’s haunting Kreisleriana as his starting point in his album, ‘Schumann & Brahms’. This eight-movement work portrays the mercurial personality of the fictional Johannes Kreisler, created by E. T. A. Hoffmann: Kreisler’s highs and lows, and his dreamy nature, clearly mirror Schumann’s own tragic manic-depressive tendencies. Grosvenor responds to the composer’s autobiographical honesty with playing of sublime tenderness, dazzling variety, and imaginative empathy. He accompanies the work with the melancholic Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann by Schumann’s beloved wife Clara (who, incidentally, stated that she was much disturbed by the visions conjured up in Kreisleriana). Further kaleidoscopic variety is provided by Robert’s Blumenstück, and Quasi Variazione: Andantino de Clara Wieck. The recital also includes Brahms’ Three Intermezzi, autumnal works which shed a fascinating light on the complicated relationship which existed between Robert, Clara and Brahms himself. Grosvenor’s own arrangement of Robert’s Abendlied completes the programme.

Benjamin is due to receive nationwide media attention when he performs at the First Night of the Proms, which will be followed by a BBC Breakfast News appearance. He will also tour this season with the National Youth Orchestra (and play at their BBC Prom) showing his relevance and support to young classical musicians today.

The three principal works that Benjamin Grosvenor has chosen for his first concerto album complement each other perfectly. The urbane charm and dazzling virtuosity of Saint-Saëns lead naturally on to the brittle brilliance and dry wit of his fellow Frenchman Ravel. Ravel’s distinctly jazzy G major Concerto was written soon after he’d met Gershwin, and just a few years after the great Broadway songsmith had so spectacularly gatecrashed his way into the classical world with his syncopated, note-bending Rhapsody in Blue.

For his new recital published on the Decca label, Benjamin Grosvenor has chosen Franz Liszt, whose music has followed him since his childhood thanks to his grandfather’s initiation. Dedicated to the pianistic monument that is the Sonata in B minor, the English pianist’s programme aims to bear witness to the various aspects underlying the Hungarian composer’s creation with emblematic compositions (Petrarch’s Three Sonnets), original ones (Lullaby), as well as the extraordinary power of re-creation that Liszt distilled in his paraphrases; here we find the Reminiscences of Norma after Bellini and his arrangement of Schubert’s Ave Maria.

Pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, 24 years old when this album appeared in 2016, has made a splash with his seemingly effortless technical mastery and his ability to put across a feeling of suppressed energy. There are many technical difficulties in these Romantic showpieces, but Grosvenor lets them roll off his fingers without raising the temperature much until the end, in the Liszt Tarantella from the Venezia e Napoli (Venice and Naples) set of Années de pèlerinage. It’s an impressive display of control, said to be matched by considerable charisma in live performance. The program, which might have been played a century ago, is almost refreshing for that reason, but it’s not totally coherent: the first three “Homages” are to Bach, while the last two are not homages to a person, but to cities, and to a pair of them at that. Still, the individual pieces work well on their own terms. César Franck’s Prélude, Choral, et Fugue, FWV 21, benefits greatly from Grosvenor’s ability to suggest currents of passion beneath the surface, and the Mendelssohn set of Six Preludes and Fugues, Op. 35, are sharply characterized and infused with an unusual degree of contrast for the collection, which often suffers from over-academic performances. This release showcases a young pianist with the potential to become a star in the time-honored Romantic virtuoso mold.

Dances is a dazzling display of solo works for piano from Bach to Boogie Woogie; via Chopin, Granados, Albeniz, Scriabin and the Blue Danube. For his second solo album on Decca, Benjamin Grosvenor has assembled a typically imaginative and appealing programme of piano music inspired by the dance form. Shining the spotlight on the music of movement, this album was inspired by a letter from the great pianist-composer Ferruccio Busoni to his pupil Egon Petri proposing a “dance programme” as a theme for Petri’s recitals, a concept Grosvenor expanded on for his Queen Elizabeth Hall debut recital in 2012.

A former Gramophone Young Artist of the Year, Grosvenor will appearing at two BBC Proms in 2014 with a performance of Chopin’s First Piano Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (8th August), followed by a solo recital at Cadogan Hall (1st September). In 2011, he was awarded the honour of opening the BBC Proms Concerts season and was the youngest-ever soloist to perform on the ‘First Night’.
