released in 1964 on the Brazilian Elenco label, this LP marks a milestone in the music of Brazil. The guitarist combined the bouncy bossa groove with the much harder, more demanding rhythms of the Afro-Brazilian culture, which is especially characteristic in the north of the country (great: drummer João Batista Stockler Pimentel) and dispensed with all the usual orchestral arrangements, only a flute is allowed to interfere for once. The result, which went down in music history as an Afro-bossa, is as straightforward as it is fascinating – and develops an amazing suction effect in tracks like “Sorongaio”. Some of the great Powell classics, which immediately became standards, can be heard here in the original versions: “Berimbau”, “Candomble” and “Consoloção”, for example. But even the well-known girl from Ipanema has a completely different (more animalistic!) Charisma as usual…!

For almost half a century, the Brazilian born guitar player Baden Powell has been one of the key musicians among his country’s jazz scene. However, Powell’s work demonstrates a mastery of many classical guitar styles, from the South American tradition of flamenco to interpretations of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Nevertheless, on the whole Powell built his reputation as an innovator of bossa nova or the marriage of Brazilian sambas and jazz, often aided by the poet and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes. Although his popularity in the United States has never truly expanded beyond jazz and guitar aficionados, Powell’s name has been virtually a household word in Europe from the early 1960s, when he relocated to that continent for several decades.

Crowned with one of the most fanciful covers in the entire MPS catalogue, this October 1971 Baden Powell recording heralded in the second trilogy of the six LPs he recorded for the label between 1966 and 1975. Fueled by his artistic partnership with writer-producer Joachim Ernst Berendt (Berendt helped further Powell’s European career by inviting him to play at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1967), Powell was without a doubt the most inventive Brazilian guitarist of the period. On this album Powell and his new quartet sketch the sound tableaus that color the background for French singer Janine Waleyne. The singer had partnered with the likes of Stan Getz and Michel Legrand. For Powell she was an ideal counterpart to his guitar playing. The journey begins with the sedate, almost somber samba “Até-Eu”. With its wandering nocturnal melancholy “Violão Vagabundo” follows a similar musical path. There’s a funky feel to the popular hit “Blues À Volonté”. It also harbors one of the most brilliant scat choruses to be heard between Rio, Paris, and Baden-Baden. The theatrical finesse of “Images” insures that virtuoso solo interludes shine between the vocal pieces. This is where we find the LP’s other famous pieces – the classy “Petit Waltz” with its capricious, careening rhythms in the second section, and “Conversação Comigo Mesmo” (conversation with myself), a fantastic hybrid of choro and baroque with a percussive foundation. The unpretentious serenade “Sentimentos” presents Powell as a profound lyricist; and “É De Lei” is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of chromatics. With its intensive dialogue between rock-oriented improvisation and a magical sensuousness, “Canto” closes out this richly colored album.

Brazilian guitar maestro Baden Powell’s seminal years with producer Joachim-Ernst Berendt and MPS stretch from 1966 to 1975, with a total of two sets of three LPs. Tristeza On Guitar was the beginning of this nine-year collaboration. The repertoire is in no way characterized by sadness, as the title might cause one to believe. It embraces a sublime spectrum ranging from a ritual feel to exuberant carnival atmosphere on through to intimate songs with a singable quality.

One of Baden Powell’s most popular records does not reveal its recording date. Even extensive research could not answer our questions. “Estudos” is one of his most experimental studio recordings and very well known. Baden Powell recorded only together with the percussionist Alfredo Bessa. Partly he over-dubbed guitar, bass and percussion, now and then he uses sound effects. Some compositions already show harmonies of Apaixonado. Hardly any other record contains so many solo pieces that became guitarist’s standard reportoire quickly. It remains unknown if the material was originally intended for the planned solo record to be done in December 1971.
