The Rhine is where Richard Wagner’s cycle of operas “Der Ring des Nibelungen” begins and ends – and it was beside the Rhine in 1851 that the composer first dreamed of this equally visionary and monumental work. The main instrumental work of the opera composer Franz Schreker not only begs a comparison to Arnold Schoenberg’s First Chamber Symphony, but also fulfils the principle developed by Franz Liszt of melding various types of movements into a large one-movement form. Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Un “petit rien” was taken from his own music for a radio drama and links the title to a ballet composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
