This album is the story of a dialogue between two voices: the singing voice and the voice of the cello, which has always been considered the instrument closest to the human voice. It is also the story of two worlds and the meeting of two cultures, East and West. The East we encounter here is Armenia, its thousand-year-old culture, its music and its songs, which resonate with the compositions of Bach, Kodály and Ligeti. For the cellist Astrig Siranossian, vocal melody and the sound of the cello are two voices that she has always combined in her concerts, coupling a dance from a solo cello suite by Bach with an Armenian song that she performs with great sensitivity. East and West, Armenia and Europe: it is her roots and her emotions that the young cellist shares with us here. This recording was made on two different cellos, according to the repertory: an instrument by Francesco Ruggieri dating from 1676 and the famous Giovanni Gagliano of 1756 known as the ‘Sir John Barbirolli’.

The year 2021 marks the centenary of the death of Camille Saint-Sa”ens, the French pianist, organist, critic and great Romantic composer. The cellist Astrig Siranossian plays the first of his two cello concertos, composed in 1872, notable for the fact that it comprises a single movement in three sections, and for the thunderous irruption of the cello right at the start. She is accompanied by the Philharmonie S”udwestfalen and its conductor Nabil Shehata, who is also an eminent double bass player – the principal of the Berlin Philharmonic in the 2000s – and deeply committed to Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, of which Astrig is also a member.

French cellist Astrig Siranossian, a graduate of the Lyon CNSM and then of the prestigious Basel Hochschule went on to win First Prize and special prizes in the Krzysztof Penderecki competition: so it should come as no surprise that for this first solo album she has chosen a programme that brings together both the Second Concerto by Penderecki, written in 1982 and dedicated to Rostropovitch, and Khatchatourian’s Concerto – Khatchatourian was Armenian, and it will not have escaped readers’ notice that Siranossian is also an Armenian name. The young soloist is proving much sought-after: most notably, she has been invited to spend the next season with Daniel Barenboim at the new Pierre Boulez Hall in Berlin under the direction of Zubin Mehta, Simon Rattle and Antonio Pappano. Her musical partners include Yo-Yo Ma, Daniel Barenboim, Sol Gabetta, Bertrand Chamayou and Daniel Ottensamer, and she has graced stages as diverse as the Paris Philharmonic, the Vienna Musikverein the Salle Flagey in Brussels, the Buenos Aires Teatro Cólon the Kennedy Center in Washington… Note also that since 2015, she has been the artist in residence at the Queen Elizabeth Music Chapel in Belgium. This is a most promising musician whose career is one to watch closely.

An emblematic figure of her time, Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) taught and inspired several generations of musicians, from Igor Stravinsky to Quincy Jones. Her musical and pedagogical philosophy, demanding yet highly stimulating, influenced the entire twentieth century. Astrig Siranossian, a rising star of the cello, is fascinated by this musical personality whom everyone respectfully called ‘Mademoiselle’. She met some of her most illustrious students, including the late Michel Legrand, and Daniel Barenboim who has agreed to accompany her in a piece on the album.

With the pianist Nathanaël Gouin, she has devised a very eclectic programme, including the Three pieces for cello and piano written by Nadia Boulanger in 1915, three years before the death of her sister Lili.

A wide-ranging album, featuring Igor Stravinsky’s Suite italienne, Elliott Carter’s Cello Sonata, Astor Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango, Tissue No. 7 by Philip Glass, Soul Bossa Nova by Quincy Jones, and music by Michel Legrand and others.
