Paier and Valcic’s music is always sensual and rich in images, and this opulence of colours and pictures is also at the heart of what “Cinema Scenes” is about: they let their impressions of films flow freely as music, but above all the two musicians give expression to their own visual ideas.

The world of music has raved for more than a decade over Klaus Paier, an accordionist from Austria, and Asja Valcic, a cellist from Croatia. The German trade periodical “Jazzthing” praised “how timelessly and genre-transcending the duo makes music while taking jazz as its basis. Listening to one another, communicating, stitching anew onto the other’s ideas.” Applause came from “The Guardian” for the “gripping interplay,” and “Paris Move” saw “an invitation for the listener to cross boundaries.” For their SKIP debut album entitled “Fractal Beauty” the two have now expanded their phonic cosmos by adding Gerald Preinfalk, a woodwind player from Vienna whose CV includes work with the Vienna Art Orchestra as well as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Bass clarinet, soprano sax and clarinet provide meticulously coordinated colorings that nestle perfectly on the sounds of accordion and cello.

Accordionist Klaus Paier and cellist Asja Valcic have been making music as a duo for ten years. Their playing has kept audiences delighted and critics enthralled: “Breathtaking,” said the magazine Der Spiegel; they are “a captivating match” (The Guardian). During this time the two have recorded four albums which have received numerous awards. The duo’s journey together began in 2009 with their debut album “À Deux”, and since then Paier and Valcic have proceeded to make their unique accordion-plus-cello sound into a thing of wonder. The titles of the previous albums by these two musicians, who live in Austria, give pointers to the elements that go into the making of their acts of musical creation: in 2013 their path together continued with “Silk Road”, followed by “Timeless Suite” (2015), which in turn led to the more opulent “Cinema Scenes”, for quartet. The sound is always their starting point: they have a finesse and eloquence from classical music, combined with the free-thinking, quicksilver instinctiveness of jazz, and influences from many parts of the world. And what results is capacious, widescreen music.

Paier and Valcic’s music is daring and full of curiosity, they present us with a road movie beyond convention that is full of layers and colours. “Silk Road” still maintains a unique and homogenous sound created by two adventurous explorers, who both fully master their instruments whilst complementing each other perfectly. Like so often, it took a long time to form something that nowadays seems destined to be together. It began twelve years ago, when Austrian accordionist Klaus Paier assembled a string quartet for one of his projects, and these four went on to become the radio.string.quartet.vienna. After their sensational debut album “Celebrating the Mahavishnu Orchestra“ they worked together with Klaus Paier on their next album “Radiotree” and it did not go unnoticed how well Asja Valcic’s cello suited Paier’s accordion. It was the beginning of a co-operation – “A Deux”, which, according to the SPIEGEL, combined “spectacular bitter-sweet sounds of an accordion with a cello that can groove like an upright bass” into “the very best of euro jazz”. Both audience and critics were sold, and the accolades followed, such as the “CD of the month” in Audio and Fono Forum.

The classical form of piano trio is unfamiliar in jazz spheres – but, for Finnish pianist/composer Iiro Rantala, Polish violinist Adam Baldych and Austrian cellist Asja Valcic (all classically trained), it seems the perfect grouping to animate these jazz originals from Rantala.
