The violin concertos by Benjamin Britten and Paul Hindemith are among the most famous and, above all, the best violin concertos of the 20th century. From the very first day they were among the standards in the programs of the great violin virtuosos. To this day, they are a touchstone for every violin soloist. And of course for every soloist. Arabella Steinbacher is opening a new phase of her outstanding career with this challenging program. With these interpretations, she confronts herself with the comparison to the great grandees of the past and present. Because who wouldn’t immediately have David Oistrakh in mind when it comes to Hindemith’s violin concerto or Mark Lubotsky for Britten’s contribution to the genre? However, Arabella Steinbacher is in no way inferior to these legendary violinists of the mono era with her latest interpretation. Instead of attacking timeless references, she goes her own way and, with her famously lyrical violin tone, reveals a side of these concerts that is still relatively poorly illuminated. Steinbacher lends Paul Hindemith’s 1939 masterpiece of musical modernism an unusually bucolic note with her outstanding phrasing, while she exposes the most wonderful melodies in Britten’s concerto. With the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin under the direction of its new chief conductor Vladimir Jurowski, she is supported by congenial musical partners who have already proven many times that they are among the most important specialists for music of the 20th century.

This release arguably features the two greatest concertos ever written for the violin: performed by one of the most brilliant violinists of her generation, together with one of the finest orchestras, and under the baton of one of the world’s foremost conductors. This recording of Tchaikovsky/Mendelssohn violin concertos bears witness to the eminence of the collaboration between violinist Arabella Steinbacher, conductor Charles Dutoit and PENTATONE’s Orchestra of the Season January June 2015, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the result thereof.

After waiting for a long time to record these concertos with the perfect collaboration, Arabella Steinbacher didn’t waste any chance to shine with heart-felt enthusiasm and bravura in this recording.
Her performance produced such a pure, yet fierce sound that it allowed the music to speak in an immediate, translucent way. Recorded in September 2014 in the magnificent Victoria Hall, Geneva, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande were totally at home with the repertoires and performed with great confidence; they were led by Dutoit, who was vivid, rhythmic and clear in his direction. The vigorous playing results in a vibrant sound that is captured perfectly in this multi channel SACD recording.

Violinist Arabella Steinbacher studied her first Mozart Violin Concerto in G major at the age of eight. The legendary pianist Arthur Schnabel mentioned that the piano sonatas of Mozart are too easy for children yet too difficult for adults. In Steinbacher’s words: In Mozart one must always make sure that it’s powerful, but at the same time never sounds aggressive and that the sound always remains beautifully pure and almost angelic.

And since then the piece has become the underlying theme throughout her career. She played the piece during many important moments of her life. It was also the piece that got Arabella accepted as the youngest students of Ana Chumachenko when she was nine. Yet it never came to a CD recording while listeners regularly ask for it.

In making the recording Ms Steinbacher said,” I’m glad it can finally be recorded now. Mozart connects me to my childhood and it has opened many doors.”

Any number of recordings pair Bach’s music with those of the minimalists, with Pärt being primary among them. The idea is that Baroque-style instrumental figuration is common to both and offers a contrast to Romantic musical dynamics. However, the equation is often too pat, and the two composers require some mediation to make them fit. That is what happens in this release by violinist Arabella Steinbacher and the conductorless Stuttgarter Kammerorchester. Steinbacher’s solution is not to enliven Pärt but to push Bach in a minimalist direction with straightforward, rather featureless performances where the violin (or pair of violins in the Concerto for two violins and orchestra in D minor, BWV 1043) is blended into the textures. It works for several reasons. One is Steinbacher’s Guarneri violin, with a gorgeous sonority that flows through the slow movements and forms a counterpart to the rich resonances of Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel, which closes the program. Beyond that is the dynamic of the entire program, which takes on a hypnotic quality. One might not choose Steinbacher’s Bach concertos on their own, but in this context, they have a cumulative effect. This novel recording is especially recommended to Pärt fans. – James Manheim

Less than a century ago it was still very common that great violinists like Heifetz, Kreisler, Menuhin etc. played virtuosic pieces in their concerts, very often also their own transcriptions. Nowadays these pieces are unfortunately rarely played in concert halls, sometimes with the reason that this kind of repertoire is “not serious enough”, which I find is really a pity and also not true. Usually violinists study this repertoire at a young age to expand their technical ability on the instrument but afterwards, they tend to focus more on Concertos and Sonatas. I have to admit that the last time I myself played this repertoire was before I was even a teenager, and I had almost forgotten about it.

However, every time I work together with Larry Foster, he is full of stories about Jasha Heifetz from their time together in the 1960s and it is like being taken to another world. Then suddenly the idea came to us; why not make a recording full of these pieces like in the “old days”?

Despite the relatively short time since the dawn of her international career, which began in 2004, violinist Arabella Steinbacher is already leaving a significant mark on the concert stages and recording studios of the world by this 2009 recording. She is rapidly proving herself to be an extremely mature, well-developed artist capable of handling the most musically sophisticated compositions in her repertoire. Such is certainly the case with the present performance of Karol Szymanowski’s intense, gripping First Concerto. Few violinists tackle this marvelous concerto, but Steinbacher approaches it with every bit as much reverence as is typically given to concertos of Shostakovich or Bartók. What’s more, her clear understanding of and unity with the score capture the attention of listeners from the first bar to the last. Her phenomenal technique allows her to focus on maintaining lines, coloring each note, and making sense of Szymanowski’s melodic language. The PentaTone album continues with an equally engaging performance of the Dvorák Violin Concerto. Although this concerto is performed with great frequency, Steinbacher’s interpretation is energetic and driven, robust without being overly sentimental, and powerful without being forced. Marek Janowski leads the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin in masterful, restrained accompaniments and rich, enthusiastic tuttis. PentaTone’s sound, particularly for those listening in 5.1-channel surround sound, is warm, present, and clear.

Star violinist Arabella Steinbacher presents Antonio Vivaldi’s world-famous Four Seasons alongside Astor Piazzolla’s Cuatro estaciones porteñas, creating a lively combination of baroque and tango. The enormous popularity of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons tends to make us forget the original and ground-breaking nature of these violin concertos. Coupling them with Piazzolla’s tango-inspired Four Seasons of Buenos Aires makes both pieces sound fresher than ever before, thanks to Steinbacher’s personal engagement with the repertoire and the inspired accompaniment of the Münchener Kammerorchester. Piazzolla’s music is performed here in a new arrangement for violin and string orchestra by Peter von Wienhardt, whose Strauss song arrangements on Steinbacher’s previous album Aber der Richtige … (2018) were extensively praised by the press.

Arabella Steinbacher completes her Mozart cycle. After having recorded Mozart’s last three violin concertos in 2014, Arabella Steinbacher, the Festival Strings Lucerne and its leader Daniel Dodds now complete the cycle by presenting Mozart’s less well-known, but equally enchanting Violin Concertos No. 1 & No. 2, together with his Adagio in E Major and Rondos in C Major and in B-flat Major. Steinbacher plays the cadenzas by Wolfgang Schneiderhan, who co-founded the Festival Strings Lucerne in 1956. Another exciting aspect of this album is that she plays for the first time on the “Ex Benno Walter” Strad from 1718.

This album is violinist Arabella Steinbacher’s tribute to the favourite composer of her family household. The music of Richard Strauss has played a crucial role throughout her life. As great Strauss lovers, her parents named her after the main character of Strauss’ opera Arabella, and the family house was filled with Strauss melodies, often sung live by famous singers accompanied by Steinbacher’s father, who was a solo- répétiteur at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.
