Penderecki’s Symphony No. 6 ‘Chinese Songs’ is an intimate, chamber-scale work for bass-baritone and orchestra. It sets eight Chinese poems in German adaptations linked with interludes for the two-stringed erhu. It proved to be Penderecki’s last completed symphony and is imbued with great pathos as well as melodic beauty. The Trumpet Concertino is taut, spirited and full of dextrous interplay between the soloist and orchestra. His single-movement Concerto doppio for violin, cello and orchestra, is a work of keen unpredictability.

Award-winning conductor Antoni Wit leads the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra on this 1992 release of Prokofiev’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 3 and 4. Virtuoso Korean pianist Kun Woo Paik, the soloist on this album, performed all five Prokofiev piano concertos in Poland with the PNRSO and recorded them immediately following the concerts. The Piano Concerto No. 1 is scored for a full orchestra, its percussion section augmented unusually by tubular bells.

Using the new Polish National Chopin Edition, acclaimed pianist Eldar Nebolsin and Poland’s national orchestra conducted by the renowned Polish conductor Antoni Wit, here present fresh interpretations of Chopin’s great works for piano and orchestra. The Second Piano Concerto was written before the first and completed in 1830, the year in which the composer set out for Vienna and then Paris. Chopin’s Variations on Là ci darem la mano, bear witness to his admiration for Mozart, instilled by his earliest teacher, the Bohemian Wojciech Żywny. The Grande Polonaise brillante in E flat, Op. 22, was written in Vienna, and later augmented with the introductory Andante spianato.

Stojowski might be considered as one of the many missing links between Frédéric Chopin and Karol Szymanowski, who shaped Polish music between the second half of the 19th century and the dawn of modernism… but somehow never entered the repertoire. This is a composer of the high, late-romantic tradition – a style that Stojowski never found any reason to reject and with a strong gift for melody. Stojowski’s work proves the composer’s deft hand at colorful instrumentation, which suggests Russian and French influences. Entering the United States in 1905, he enjoyed a fine reputation as a composer, pianist, and increasingly pedagogue but his lack of presence on the continent meant that Stojowski faded into obscurity.
