By 1963, Annie Ross had permanently moved back to England and had started working more as an actress than as a singer. This interesting set (reissued by DCC as an audiophile CD) features Ross backed by an orchestra arranged and conducted by Johnnie Spence. The obvious high point is one of the darkest and scariest versions of “Love For Sale” ever recorded; Ross’ desperate-sounding rendition is haunting. Otherwise, she performs a variety of standards in lightly swinging fashion, not scatting or using vocalese but instead working on interpreting the lyrics. Other highlights include “All of You,” “Nature Boy,” “Like Someone in Love” and “Limehouse Blues.” This worthy set was also put out on CD by the Fresh Sound label.

Annie Ross is a British-American singer and actress, best known as a member of the jazz vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. On this set Annie Ross sits in with saxophonist Pony Poindexter’s band during a 1966 concert in Frankfurt, Germany, with delightful results. The sound is impeccable, as the audience is not at all audible during most of the performances, though it is clear from the audio that this is not a studio album disguised as a live one.

After I finally accepted the fact that I had no future as a rock singer, I switched to jazz, which is a bit easier on the voice. I am still very nostalgic for this period of my life. I was like a kid in a candy store and couldn’t get enough of discovering new artists, especially singers—female, preferably. My on-the-job training began when I joined Pieces of Dreams, a popular jazz group based in Kalamazoo, MI. I was the only singer, and I played alto sax and flute on certain arrangements. All of the guys were amazing musicians, and in this newbie they found an eager pupil!

This CD reissue brings back one of Annie Ross’ most obscure albums of the 1950’s. Recorded at a time when the singer was just starting to get known for her work with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, the set is a swinging but largely straight rendition of the score from the play “Gypsy.” The all-star backup band mostly functions as an ensemble during the Buddy Bregman arrangements (although altoist Herb Geller and trombonist Frank Rosolino have short spots on “All I Need Is A Boy”), taking “Overture” as an instrumental that introduces some of the main melodies. Ross is in excellent form, performing a memorable version of the score’s one real hit “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and somehow sounding serious on “Let Me Entertain You.” Still, this release is mostly recommended to fans of show tunes and Annie Ross completists.

Although best known as a member of the vocalese supergroup Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, the great jazz singer Annie Ross’s solo albums are gems unto themselves and “A Gasser!” from 1959 is the finest of them all. Miss Ross is in peak vocal form here and is joined by the great Zoot Sims on saxophone and much of the same band featured on the Lambert, Hendricks & Ross classic “The Swingers”.

Don’t expect any of the vocal acrobatics of the Lambert, Hendricks & Ross recordings however. This is straight-ahead jazz singing by one of the great singers in her prime. From the wry wit of “Everything I’ve Got” through the sheer perfection and beauty of “You’re Nearer”, this set is a must-have for jazz vocal fans. Highly recommended. Joseph Shelt.
