‘Stupendous brilliance, breathless virtuosity. Anne-Sophie Mutter’s Virtuosi thrilled at the Vienna Musikverein’ (Die Presse). In June 2023, star violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter gave an impressive concert in Vienna with her Virtuosi ensemble. Based on this, a varied album has now been created, with music by Antonio Vivaldi, J. S. Bach, Joseph Bologne, André Previn and John Williams. ‘Growing up, I’m on the trail of storytellers,’ Mutter says of her work with the Virtuosi, a rotating ensemble of current and former Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation scholarship holders. Under Mutter’s professional and musical direction, the ensemble is tailor-made for baroque and classical music. This is now evident on this album with Vivaldi’s Concerto for Three Violins, RV 551, the Presto movement of ‘Summer’ from the Four Seasons, J. S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, and the Violin Concerto by Mozart’s contemporary Joseph Bologne. But the repertoire also reflects Mother’s love of contemporary works: The Virtuosi perform André Previn’s Nonet dedicated to Anne-Sophie Mutter. The music of Hollywood legend John Williams can also be heard, and two works are arrangements from Cinderella Liberty and Schindler’s List, reworked especially for the Virtuosi.

We’ve grown so accustomed to seeing violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter gracing album covers in her flowing formal gowns that this recording of Vivaldi’s masterpiece may come as a shock to her fans, at least at first glance. Mutter, it appears, has been influenced by Gap culture, looking relaxed and appearing in jeans on the album cover. To coincide with this release, she even released a music video, featuring the Trondheim Soloists and herself performing the glorious work and looking like they’re having a blast. Is this the shape of classical music to come? Let’s hope so. Mutter’s performance here, as usual, is top-notch. The opening movements of Spring sound delightful, the Summer storm sounds frenzied, and during Winter’s second movement, you can practically hear the chill being warded off by a fire. Her impeccable tone is, as usual, gorgeous and the conductorless Trondheims provide a fine, if slightly obscured, accompaniment. Filling out this disc is Tartini’s Sonata in G Minor (better known as The Devil’s Trill), a wonderful piece of baroque violin virtuosity. There have never been so many recordings of Four Seasons available as right now; there really is no definitive version anymore. This one, however, is easy to recommend. –Jason Verlinde

Thirty years after their last recording together, violin virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter reunited in 2013 with the Berlin Philharmonic, the orchestra with whom her international career began. During that long interval, both she and the orchestra developed their repertoire and refined their musicianship in their own ways. Mutter has been playing Dvořák’s music for decades but had never recorded his Violin Concerto until now. Together with conductor Manfred Honeck and the Berlin Philharmonic, she gives us a voluptuous and emotional interpretation of the Romantic-era work. Mutter also includes Dvořák’s Mazurek, Op. 49, Romance in F Minor and Humoresque to round out this album.

Anne-Sophie Mutter’s debut recording was of Mozart’s Third and Fifth violin concertos, made when she was 15 years old, with conductor Herbert von Karajan. In 2003, she returned to Mozart, recording all five of the concertos and the Sinfonia concertante as both violinist and conductor. Mutter is accompanied by the London Philharmonic, and in the Sinfonia is joined by violist Yuri Bashmet. Mutter’s more mature tone and technique are on display in this popular set of concertos.

Tango Song and Dance was composed in 1997 as a set of lighthearted virtuoso pieces for Anne-SophieMutter. At the time, the Tango revival craze had not yet been born, and so the first movement with its purposeful and exaggerated Tango clichés was still possible. The clustered harmonies are not terribly far removed from the sound the traditional accordion makes, and the whole movement should be full of self-conscious poses. Not much needs to be said about the middle movement; the title Song is self-explanatory. The violin predominates throughout, and the accompaniment is simple and direct. The Dance is a bit more complicated. Just when the rhythm threatens to relax into eight beats per bar, it trips over the last note and becomes seven. I doubt whether dancers would be happy keeping time to this, but of course for two instrumentalists it becomes a good deal easier. The ending is percussive and relentless and an unadulterated C major puts the final stamp on things. –André Previn

Mozart’s six piano trios are intimate works, but these three in particular balance the instruments so well and give each so much to do that they have a grandeur all their own; they never seem slight. All of these are lateMozart (two were composed after his 31st birthday). Mutter, as one might expect, plays them with warmth and a clear eye toward the 19th century; in other words, these are very romantic readings. This approach works exceptionally well in the rapturous slow movements of the 6th and 5th, the former marked “cantabile” and the latter “grazioso.” Mutter and company play them exactly as marked ,and her ardency is beyond criticism. It is here that her partners are at their best as well: Müller-Schott’s cello sings beautifully, and Previn’s piano playing is a lesson in legato. Throughout, Mutter plays with impeccable technique and pitch; indeed, her ease in all passages is a joy to behold. Contrarily, Previn occasionally sounds rushed in fast passages. Some might prefer their Mozart to be more “classical, ” i.e., crisper and with somewhat less sliding, but there’s no denying the sheer loveliness–and love of music-making–that one gets from this CD. –Robert Levine
